Retro done right.

Shovel Knight, an action-platformer truly worthy of its NES roots, that delivers fun gameplay, great design, and a tide of memories in perfectly captured 8-bit style, is available on GOG.com for $14.99.

There has been way too many games recently aiming to cash in on our nostalgia without ever delivering what they promise: a real throwback to the classic gaming ideas and authentic retro feeling. Not this time! Here, even the story is perfectly nostalgic. The shovel-wielding hero has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. But, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent the hero from reaching the Enchantress, and will pursue their mission at any cost. If you love games with perfect platforming, beautiful art, infectious music, crazy bosses, humor and levity, and real heart… this one is for you!

Shovel Knight is a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It's a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly! With classic NES-era platforming gameplay, great humor, excellent level design, and perfectly captured graphical style of old, this amazing little gem offers to take you on a nostalgia trip you won't soon forget.

Prepare to jump, dig, dig-jump, and jump-dig in the amazing limited-palette realm of Shovel Knight, for $14.99 on GOG.com.

gandalf.nho: I remember not backing the KS because the Nintendo-inspiration apparently envolved the high difficulty too. For the people already playing, is really Nintendo Hard?
I know that such an high difficulty might not appeal to everyone, but I for one hope it is Nintendo Hard - or better, that the game contains such an hard mode. I spent months and months playing Megaman and Castlevania, and I would really love to put my hands on a similar game again! :)

This game does old better than actual old games.

OLD =\= GOOD
Appreciate the new release during a sale week. Thanks GOG!

If GOG can't secure the truly GOOD old games, and keeps releasing old games that aren't that good, just to appease the typical bitching and moaning GOGger that surfaces every once in a while, it would be doing all of their consumer base a disservice. I'd rather see GOOD new games than plain 'meh' old titles, just because they're "classics".

And, like fortune_p_dawg said, Shovel Knight does GOOD old better than most of actually old games.

I'm sure there is no better old games than this one......
But wait, on Wishlist I found one or two.

One problem with the wishlist, though. We can all go on, we can all vote, we can tell our stories about how games X, Y or Z changed our lives or defined our youths, and assuming the snarl of legality can even be worked out?
A company still has to give a crap. And a lot of them could care less about nostalgic good feeling. They want money, and they want the game to be played their way.

I agree with all of you.
There is so many new Indie games I would buy in instant (Knights of the Chalice, Creeper World, Drox Operative...).
But I hate that there is less and less classics here. :(
And I do not understand these companies, they want money but they do not give permissions for distribution of theirs games. Does anyone has any idea how they explain decisions like this?
So I guess abandonware is only available option to us, we get game for free and they get nothing.
It's weird, I'm an 80's child and big retro gamer today and I feel like I should like this, but... eh. Even though it's been hyped to death, and people everywhere seem excited for it, I've felt nothing but apathy for it from the day it first appeared. :/

Edit: Oh, and releasing a big deal game like this when everyone's probably already emptied their wallets in the sales? Not exactly the greatest business decision.

Hardly. You've been around long enough so you should have noticed that during these big sales events GOG doesn't (re-)release any classics whatsoever. The only reason we've gotten this and Xenonauts is because GOG would be stupid not to put them up on their release date. It's that simple. Kind of bad timing for those devs, but there you have it.

EDIT: I'm definitely interested in this one, but as said above it's bad timing to release new games just now. I already spent enough for now (besides picking up Xenonauts last week)... so on the wishlist you go.

There's still a lot that could be brought to the table, by a number of companies. But far too many are worried about the next biggest shiniest thing that has all the substance of a puddle of dog urine. Their stupidity, their loss.
And where's Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom ?????????
Sweet, been waiting for this!
Bold to release during sale week(s).....might give it a look...
