I just played Frog Fractions http://twinbeardstudios.com/frog-fractions a parody edutainment game which was awesome. It's definitely worth playing and keep an eye for the merman watching tv in the level about the history of boxing.

Got curious about what else I could be missing. So anyone has a good free game like that to recommend?

In the ninja thread somebody (sorry, can't remember the name right now) recommended Maldita Castilla: http://www.locomalito.com/maldita_castilla.php. I still haven't played it, but it looks great and I loved Ghost'n'Goblins when I was a kid, so I am sure I'll check it out.
Your link just leads back to this thread, buddy.

Donna: Avenger of Blood is quite highly praised around here. I have it downloaded, but haven't had the time to try it yet.
Battle for Wesnoth of course.

Aaand Iji just so story-based, action-RPG platformers are present.

Maldita Castilla is not released yet, but it will be free when it's done.

Anyway, we have a specific thread for such suggestions here.

As for myself, I wouldn't know where to start. There are so many great freeware games out there for all kinds of genres and tastes ...

Thread is... favorited.

Don't know as to the legality of this, but Cybermage.
The White Chamber - A point-and-click sci-fi/horror adventure.
Assault Trooper - An isometric action arcade game.
Survival Crisis Z - A survival-horror action game
Death Rally - A top-down shooting and racing game
Major Stryker - An old-school shmup
Bio Menace - A very fun old-school run-n-gun
Of all the freeware games I've ever played(and I played most of them) the best ones are:

-Battle for Wesnoth : Combat-focused TBS, lots of content due to high modability
-Dead Meets Lead: Action game with RPG elements
-The Spirit Engine 2: Side-Scrolling story-driven RPG
-Warzone 2100: RTS
-The White Chamber: Horror-Adventure

I excluded those on GOG since I assume you know all that's to know about them :)
Some more:
ERIE - very intense survival horror game
Spring RTS - used to be called Total Annihilation Spring. Has lots of fun TA spinoffs, and games not related to TA
I haven't finished it but so far I'm enjoying IB

edit:
Yume Nikki is a trippy but interesting game, especially if you take the time to really think about just what the hell is being implied
