Rifftrax, MST3K's sequel kinda, is doing a rebroadcast of their live Plan 9 from Outer Space riffing.

I won't be able to go but I was wondering if there were any MST3K/Rifftrax/Cinematic Titanic fans around here.

And if you didn't know the MST3K guys were still doing their thing over at Rifftrax (hosted by Mike Nelson but Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy regularly guest riff) and [url=http://www.cinematictitanic.com/]Cinematic Titanic[/url] (hosted by Joel Hodgson with Mary Jo Pehl, Trace Bealieu and Frank Coniff as guests) well then I guess today's your lucky day.

Rifftrax does more modern movies and Cinematic Titanic has been sticking to B-movies; they seem to do more live shows as well. I'll shamefully admit I haven't seen CT's stuff but I was aware of it and thought it was worth mentioning.

And please refrain from Mike vs. Joel debates, the fact that they have two different websites doesn't help, I know, but let's everybody agree they each have their own merits and move on.

Love MST3K! And no Mike/Joel debate from me. Enjoyed episodes from both of them. TV's Frank was my favorite character by far. Every once in a while the 'Hike up my pants' song pops into my head. Ah...good times. :)

The only MST3K we ever got here in Australia was "the Movie", which I'm pretty sure was just the Series episode involving Plan 9? Anyway I loved it at the time. I'd adore being able to see this series at some point. as me and my mates used to do this ourselves all the time. Well, sort of the same thing. What we used to do is get movies, Mute them, and then try to watch them that way, making up the plot from what we could see happening.

That idea was later totally stolen by the Double Take Team. They were a bunch of Aussie Actors and Comedians who did the exact same thing, only live in theaters. You would go to the theatre and the movie would play with no sound. The actors would them be on the stage in the front of the theatre and would live Dub all the actors, and some sound effects too, if that was funny.

I think the only one they ever released for purchase was "Hercules Returns", but it was not just one of their live shows recorded. They went to the trouble of writing a basic back story to make a proper blending of the concept of the live shows into a legitimate movie. Basically making it "a movie within a movie".

This made the DVD a unique experience, adding a different layer, as The double Take Team did not star in the movie! For the scenes establishing why the movie"Hercules" was being dubbed live they hired real actors quite popular at the time. This allowed the movie to actually have the reverse experience of watching an old movie completely re-dubbed, by then having scenes where real actors had to lip-synch "live" what the Double Take team were saying. However this joke was never explained in the movie, so those unfamiliar with the original tour concept were quite confused as to why sometimes the movies cast talked with their own voices, but other times were very obviously, and badly "dubbed", in voices that sounded nothing like the actors voice.

One of the Lead Members of The Double Take Team was also the host of the weekly Cult movie airings on one of our national networks. The movies were aired untouched, he would simply talk about them before and after. This too was massively popular here, and the man himself, Des Mangan, is still pretty much a cult personality to this day, despite being out of "the biz" for many many years. Apparently he works at a bank now.

MST3K is probably my favorite tv show of all time. Sad they took them off instant stream.

I never really watched MST3K myself but I remember hearing all about them during my heyday as a TGWTG fan. The closest I got to that program was watching a couple of movies that Rifftrax did, namely Twilight and The Room and I have to say they were pretty darn hilarious.

MST3K could be kind of rough show and I think that played a part in it never being a rating boon and always getting cast off to other networks; I mean it was a TWO HOUR television show. I adore it but I don't sit in stunned awe when someone tells me they don't like it (like I did last week when some guy told me he didn't think Airplane was funny).

I don't endorse the use of drugs of any kind and just FYI I've been totally sober for 7 years now but...my junior and senior year in high school we had a ritual every Saturday of loading up on food, getting stoned out of our minds, and plopping down in front of the t.v. for the 10 pm (or was it 11 pm) MST3K. It sounds silly but when I think of the really 'magical' (that sounds corney as hell) moments of my youth that is always first and foremost my most endearing memory. I liken it to when Gordy gets nostalgic talking about him and his friends sitting around the fire talking about things like Wagon Train and what the hell was Goofy.

MST3K is great. Too bad their DVD release had no subtitles, and it was never translated to Russian (or any other language?), so it's inaccessible for a person who don't understand spoken English well enough.

I was super excited when we went to go see The Hobbit to see a big poster at the theatre in the small town I'm in right now advertising Rifftrax Plan 9 from Outer Space and Manos: The Hands of Fate. I love MST3K, I remember seeing it when I was younger, but then I saw it on Netflix instant streaming and watched like, all the episodes they had. Are they really gone? That's a shame.

Also, I think it's very hard to compare Mike and Joel. They're two completely different kinds of characters. Joel is more of a father figure, really, and Mike is an older brother.

IIRC the movie they riffed was This Island Earth. Incidentally the movie is the only one they have on Netflix anymore as jefequeso noted.

I don't think they ever did Plan 9. It would have been too easy. Of course I don't know if I've ever seen any of season one. Most of the people who did the show admit that season one was not really worth watching.
