dirtyharry50: Hmm, I'm in OS X atm so I can't look at the launcher buttons. Does the config utility run from the launcher? I am forgetting because if I ever used it at all, it would been one time when I first began playing. I don't think you actually need it though since you can change resolutions and whatnot within the game's options menu once it is running. I wish I could fire it up now to see it and be sure I am right about that but I think I recall adjusting settings once I was into the game.
There's a jadempire.exe, config.exe and launcher.exe. Steam starts the launcher so you can pick play or config but when you pick play it somehow starts the config, temporarily I guess, anyway.

If one creates the file I mentioned in my earlier thread it bypasses it so the config can't stop the game from responding.

I'm really annoyed at the fact that the OP gave up so fast. Then again I love tweaking my games and I don't think it's common people enjoy changing options, they want to play instantly. If they do then I say: buy a console. :P

Yeah, screwing around with games at times, especially something older is just a part of PC gaming and always has been. I agree, if you can't deal with that you really are better off going with console gaming.

Nirth: I bought it myself and here's what I did to make it work:

According this link: How to resolve "Application Error: Problem checking Steam application" on Windows 7 you need admin rights for Win7 64-bit so I added that to Steam (and the game exe as well). You need to restart for this to take effect if someone isn't aware.

Then I followed this: Jade Empire Wiki

Add Vista 2 Compatibility mode for the config.exe. If it still doesn't work you need to create a file that bypases the configuration that's called "SystemInformation.xml" as a blank text file. After that it should work.

Tips: In the last link I provided it involves a few graphical tweaks along with FPS unlock, very useful. In Windows 7 the game should automatically detect your desktop resolution but after you have started it once you can change it by following it on the site.
I'm re-installing. I hate giving up and can be obsessive with getting games running correctly. I'm going to try your solutions and see what happens.

Didn't really give up. Uninstalling is just part of the venting process for me.

Yay!

This time if it nothing works of what I wrote could you take a screenshot of the problem preferably with a extra information if there's a window that arrives that says "more details".

I do that too sometimes. Especially convenient with Steam's install process.

On the note of refunds for broken games:

War Z. Textbook example that couldn't have come at a better time.
All,

thanks for all your help. Got the game to run by doing the following:

Another easy solution... Open notepad, leave blank and save as
SystemInformation.xml to the jade empire data folder
(...steam\steamapps\common\jade empire\data) and it will
skip the system configuration for first launch without
the .exe renaming mess...

Also, I believe I changed Steam to run with admin rights, but I think the real maker, was the SystemInformation.xml

Still, GOG has the better customer service than Steam as GOG participates in the forums and tries to offer solutions....(even though they wouldn't make an exception to the rule and give me Duke Nukem 3d for free; I missed the promo by a few hours; But that was my own damn fault. LOL)

Good thinking. There's always somebody like me who misses it by a few minutes because I'm busy playing something else.
What do you expect?
They allowed the War Z, a broken, unfinished scam & Towns, another unfinished game, to be sold through their service.

yep, now I need to spend sometime playing these games instead of buying more.

Of lately I have become more of a game hoarder than player. Too many good deals around the holidays to pass up.

I'm exactly the same!

Bought Batman Arkham City GOTY from Greenman last week when it was 3 quid, I have played through it though already. I was gifted the newest POP game by Nroug7 here on GOG which I have been playing a fair bit.

This evening I have bought Quest for Glory pack from here and got the new DLC for Sleeping Dogs just to name a few. My backlog at the minute is a fair size but slowly getting through it!
