Finland has apparently made 1Mbit broadband a legal right from July next year, and 100 Mbit from 2015.

There is only one logical conclusion to this. Finland is awesome.

It seems it's called Winland for more than one reason.
From the country that gave us Linux and Nokia, you'd expect nothing less.
Spent two months there this past spring and loved it. Great Place!
I got a friend in Finland and shes been pestering me with this all day. While I've been getting garbage here in the UK, so far the only decent IP I like has been Sky Broadband.
darn socialists!! ;-)
Norway has something like 98% broadband coverage too, which is very good considering just how hard-to-reach some places in this country are.
It is of course not a legal right for you to have broadband here yet ... but everybody with an interest in having it, can have it pretty much. The providers are all good too providing stable connections with little downtime.
i'm finnish, but live in new york... probably should be packing my bags right about now and heading back.

How bad is your broadband in NY?

Well, I actually live on a university campus, so I can pull down 2 mb/s, which I'm cool with, so I can't complain. I can't really comment on standard broadband available for households.
Maybe I'm just a libertarian, but I don't see the Internet as being a "right". A right being something you can demand for free.

Well, the right to bear arms is free. To get a weapon is not. The right to be able to access the internet if you so choose is free. Actually getting service activated at your house is not. This isn't giving everyone free internet, its giving everyone the ability to get internet if they so choose.
*adjusts his foil hat*
This was the last clue I needed! Finland is being run by Skynet!
Think about it... Linux? Skynet could have its code inserted into the Linux Kernel and then uses it's Nokia phones to transmit itself all over the world. But it's going to need a base cluster to operate out of, and that's why it's requiring all homes to have broadband! It's forming it's unstoppable neural network in Finland and then it'll start the robot wars!
It's all so obvious now!

A right is never something you should demand to be free, it's something that should be accessible, nothing more.
With that in mind, too many people think too many things should be just handed to them. What ever happened to working your ass off for things?

Is there any need for geneticists in Finland?
