Great news! The first patch for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is available right now in the "additional content" area of your download in "My Account" This patch fixes a number of issues. From the patch notes:

1. Fixed the free Troll Trouble DLC download. It is now included in the patch so there's no need to download and install it separately.

2. Fixed an issue that prevented some users from downloading other free DLCs (the ones given out with some pre-orders, special promotions, etc). The launcher now properly refreshes the list of available DLCs and allows for installation.

3. Performance improvements: approximately 5% to 30% better framerate and faster game loading for many users, depending on their individual systems and game versions. Owners of retail versions can expect the biggest improvements.

4. Fixed random crashes occurring on some systems, especially after saving and loading saves.

5. Key mapping – allows the arrow keys to be used for movement.

6. Added the option to invert the mouse.

7. nVidia surround vision now works properly.

8. More accurate assessment provided by the "auto-detect settings" option will help improve game performance.

9. Removed a bug that prevented completion of the “Blood Curse” quest.

10. GOG.com credits now work properly.

The last bugfix, of course, was the most important one, since you can now see who worked so hard at GOG.com to bring you the best digital version of the game anywhere on the 'Net!

As always, you can head over the The Witcher's website or let us know in our forums if you're experiencing problems.

Note: This patch only works on the gog.com version of the game.
My guess is they removed the DRM earlier than planned because deploying the patch through the launcher's buggy downloader failed miserably. Just look at the news history on the official site. Many companies would not have made this decision and with them we'd likely still be waiting for the patch.

TheEnigmaticT: A note to those of you who aren't happy about CD Projekt RED removing the DRM from all versions of the game: while CDR RED was probably going to remove the DRM eventually (as they had for The Witcher 1), I don't believe anyone planned to remove it this soon. However, the performance issues (which were especially severe on marginal systems) caused by the DRM had two possible fixes: one which was very involved and may not have worked for everyone anyway, or one which simply removed the DRM which caused the problem. The simplest solution is the best, usually, and CDP RED decided that this was the most effective way to solve the problem.

We believe GOG.com's version of the game, with its Fair Price Package, free RPG for anyone who preordered, and digital version of the artbook remains the best value on the 'Net. If you purchased the game from GOG.com as a measure of support for DRM-free gaming, don't think that your efforts went unheard. Our successful launch of The Witcher 2 on GOG.com is due to the loyalty and the integrity of people like you who wanted to show CDP RED and the gaming business at large that gamers want their entertainment DRM-free. I assure you that CDP RED has gotten that message already, and I can only hope that the rest of the industry is taking notice as well.
Quick. Give an Interplay promo to appease the masses! :P

Thanks for the information and i agree with what has been done to remove DRM for everyone for the sake of improving the game.

I bought my version from GoG more for to support the developers and GoG itself and although DRM free that was secondary to why i bought it from here.

The fact that the launch of a game without DRM has done really well (would be interesting to see % of people who bought from gog, steam and physical versions). This should i hope send shockwaves through the games industry that companies do not need to pay for their games to have copy protection as it is not needed,

Sadly you will never eliminate piracy so is it not beteer to give the customers incentives to buy their game as done here with all those sweet goodies ot bash your customers over the head with the mallot of DRM.

I think the sale of Witcher 2 shows what the customers want.
I appreciate the DRM being removed.
Prior to the patch I bested the GOG monk in the dice game and recieved the message to go to extras on the main menu to see my prize and I don't see any link. After patching there is still nothing. To be certain, I watched and read through the 15 or so minutes of credits and still nothing pertaining to GOG. Am I missing something?
Removing the DRM is double cool in my books.

About #10, I just beat the monk again with the patch (the readme has multiple mentions of it being 1.1, can't find a proper indication ingame), got the message that I should go check out Extras in the Main Menu (again), but there's only the Credits option there. I used a prepatch save game, is that a big no no?

Hm. It looks like the monk is not fixed, despite the patch notes. Dang.

Head on over to www.goodoldmonk.com if you've beat him to see what you've won.

Also, the credits *should* be there if you've updated to the current version. We checked and we saw them.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I do see the credits just no links re: GOG in the extras menu, even after watching the credits.

Awsome that I own all of those GOGs.

Btw. one of my friends just told me that now he buys Witcher 2 due to the DRM removal. Gog's digital copy wasn't an option for him since he wanted the box on his shelf.

Wersy: Bullshit. They never said they would keep all the other versions DRM-infested forever just to keep the GOG users happy.

Read the interviews: it was always something along the line of 'We hate DRM, however, we can only have a direct control over the GOG version. We'll work with our publishers to take the DRM out as soon after the release as possible".

You had you DRM free exclusivity period, in what way exactly do you feel deceived?
I talked to a guy from CDPRed during the premiere night and he said the same - they wanted to do DRM free for everyone from the beginning, but they were forced to include DRM.

If anyone feels bad about DRM not being exclusive now, you should think about those, who bought Collector's Editions for an exclusive DLC, which is now not exclusive.

gyokzoli: I just wonder how does Atari take this move.
They probably have nothing against it, since they released DRM free version on their own store.

Considering how few (ie: practically none) major PC games don't ship with DRM, he must not buy many. :p

Anyways, it appears the Retail versions are kind of screwed if they want to roll back the 1.1 patch Mr. Blue Poster, because their discs never came with the zero day 1.0 patch. I have half a mind of uploading a copy of mine somewhere, but I'm guessing that's not legal, so maybe you (CPR side of the fence) should. :)
Thank you!

Not only is it a stand alone patch but it includes the DLC as well! Glad to see you're back to your perfection standard! ;)

Will you keep the good work and include the next patches and DLCs?
great news indeed. us steam users have to download 9.3 GB.

f'n great

GameRager: Gog provided patches.....nice of them and everyone worried for nothing.

Or maybe the outcry was what spurred the patches being hosted here?
avatar
hedwards: Honestly, the concern was that they weren't going to do it. I'm not sure if this has something to do with their patching system being broken or what, but in all honesty they should've done that from the start. Especially since the only way that you can download things from here is if you have an account and access to the content legitimately.

wormholewizards: Witcher 2 on Steam free-DRM? Knowing Steam, no chance in hell it will be truly DRM-free. There still some nuisance using Steam.
avatar
hedwards: Actually, once you download some releases off steam there is no more DRM. Meaning that you can move the files and copy them as you like, the DRM only comes into it because you have to have an account with access to download it.

I did that with many iD games. I think at this point the only people buying the iD pack from Steam are doing it for the data files for use in a 3rd party engine.

Falci: Reality keeps on making you all liars! Right, TheEnigmaticT?
avatar
hedwards: Hard to say what exactly happened, but TheEnigmaticT was pretty honest about not being happy by the answer he was given even before he told us what the answer was.
Don't worry... I was joking. ;)
Thank you for releasing a downloadable patch.

I have an hardware problem who prevent me of having an Internet connection on my main rig !
I can't register the game, can't download the various DLC neither the bonus DLC of amazon.com (I have also bought the boxed Collector's Edition)

I can't play on my Internet PC (who really sucks... X-( )

I hope it won't be any change in the the future patchs release.

Thank you for keeping up the good work !
