Im playing Witcher 2 and my favorite part of the game so far is the sword combat. The motion capture is excellent and the sword handling is just beautiful to see. I love how the screen shakes a little bit when the sword hits an opponent. The impact of the sword feels heavy and so real. This is the best sword combat of any game that ive ever played, extremely well done CDProject.
I guess I should try it some day. I just really hated the first one.

Go and play Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. But yeah, TW2 got it quite well.

The first game pales in comparison with the second.

Have you tried Dark Souls. The combat is quite similar but a lot more unforgiving in Dark Souls.
....My brother does not like The Witcher 2 he thinks the Menu Interface is bad and the potion/medetation system is terrible and he now he refuses to play it.
I guess I was one of the few who liked the combat in TW1. I gave Dragon Age a try right after I finished it, and thought the combat was just boring without the timed clicks!

But it seems better in TW2. It's near the top of my list to play when I get a new pc in 2~3 months.

Witcher is Real Time Action, Dragon Age is Pause and Play Strategy which I miss to a degree.

Honsetly I am getting tired of people looking down on other combats on RPGs that is not Real Time Action.

I don't want all RPGs to be Real Time Action, it'd be boring.

Ahh I remember when timed clicks was a little catbell ding in Summoner (which with spells was also fairly tactical as well at times!)

Dragon Age is certainly a different kettle of fish, although in most mob encounters the AI can do pretty well on its own (and with the custom ai options), but yes its a pause and issue orders at key moments type affair and the style of the game also means that much of the time you won't be as much in the action as backed off keeping an eye on the field of battle.
I felt it was a little unresponsible at times, at least using the gamepad. I hear the Xbox 360 version has improved gamepad support but, unfortunately, unlike the other features in the enhanced edition apparently it wasn't implemented on the PC, granted I haven't replayed it since so I can't say for sure.

I made that comparison probably because I turn off auto-pause on Bioware RPGs, and pause only when I really need time. They got really similar with this play style, so it felt like TW1 without the clicks, in a way.

I did just play KOTOR 2 and was pausing a little more often than I used too. Probably because it got harder. I guess I will have to learn to pause if I ever decide to play Baldur's Gate 1 or 2. I have nothing against this kind of combat system, though I have indeed come to prefer more action-oriented systems in the last few years.

DA:O combat practically played itself.

I know you meant you personally don't like playing a game without some active battle input, but you do know you're comparing a horse to a dog because they both have four legs?

i.e. somewhat different genres.

Yeah the sword to sword combat was really fun, especially 1 on 1 against powerful sword-wielding opponents.

My friend once played The Witcher and he thought presentation was bad but he liked it.

The 2nd one is so much better. I actually stopped playing the first for a couple of years, before I went back in and finished it all. The 2nd one I found that I couldn't stop playing.
