torqual76: Hello,
i know everyone has different tastes. So i think the swordplay in the witcher 2 is everything but great. Sorry did you ever watch a real sword fight. Did any combatant roll around like crazy to dodge hits? To roll or jump in a sword fight is like an invitation for your opponent to land a deadly (real fight) or hurtfull blow in a sparring fight on you. In every martial art school you have to stand firmly with both feet on the ground, to have a fighting chance in absorbing parrying your opponents blows and hits. Jumping n dancing n rolling around looks fancy but has nothing to do with real fights. If you can not hold your balance by standing on both feet, you will loose your balance and a second later the fight against an experienced fighter. In Win Tsun there are movement patterns you can learn to fight several opponents at once. It is about blocking them against each other. But it does not look like dancing at all. No rolling sorry.
The sword blows in TWitcher2 have nearly zero impact on hitting enemies. All in all the witcher's 2 swordplay is not great. Its more like attack roll roll roll roll attack roll roll roll rolll roll roll attack. Stupid nonfluid and unrealistic. In TW2 you fight against 6+ enemies at once, all seasoned fighters, royal guards or city guard men, equiped with long range weapons like pikes and 2handed aces or swords. They would butcher you in a real fight. You could role around like crazy and they would only laugh at you. 'Oh my look the circus clown is in town'
Better games with good swordplay are Rune, Die by the Sword, somewhat Dark Souls (rolling around in plate armour oh my), Sovereign - Blade of Darkness, even The elder scrolls series had better swordplay then TW2.
Have a nice weekend.
Every martial art has dodging and rolling techniques. It may be uncommon in a swordfight, but not impossible. Either way, it's not about the reality of the thing, it;s about how the gameplay is and I really love having rolls and dodges in games. I guess it depends on what everybody likes but IMO swordplay in TW2 really is awesome.
