Share your Good Old Gaming memories and get up to five $9.99 games!

We are all retrogamers at heart and our identities are built on the foundation of classic gaming memories. We know you have plenty of those as well. Memories, that is, not identities (and even if, let’s just not go there). We would like to give you an opportunity to tell us about your very own greatest classic gaming moments and grab some free games in the process!

"Let's play" videos seem to be all the craze these days. But they’re so 2010’s. Let’s do something with more of a retro-feel. Let's talk about the classics! Tell us your "GOGgame Story"! There has to be at least one game on your GOG.com shelf that holds a special place in your heart. One that you think of more like an old friend than just an item of electronic entertainment. Recall the good times you had with it, record a video and upload it to YouTube to share your love for classics with the world and get a chance to grab some free games!

To put it in six simple steps:

1. Look at GOG.com catalogue of games.
Choose one that you feel like you have much to tell about.

2. Make a "GOGgame Story":
a video of some in-game footage, your commentary, and maybe even you in person--just about anything that will spice up your video.

3. Please include the following screen at the end of your video.
The image is provided in 720p resolution. If your video is smaller, re-scale or crop, but keep the 16:9 aspect ratio.

4. Upload your "GOGgame Story" to YouTube.
Call it something like "[Game Title], a GOGgame Story, by [YourGOGForumNickname]" and make it public. Also, please include the following text in the video’s description: “The game in this video is available on http://www.GOG.com”.

5. Provide a link to your video in the thread below.

6. Profit!*

* Starting next week, each Friday till the end of November, the video with the most views will be awarded with 5 codes (each for a $9.99 game). The same prize will go to the author of the most cereative video (Mr. A, our Video Ninja will be the judge of that). Yet another pack of 5 codes will be given to the author of GOG's favorite video (by popular vote of our whole staff). Three runner-up prizes, 1 code each, will be handed out as well. Ingenuity, humor, and creativity will be taken into account. Multiple entries are allowed. A public list of winning videos will be held in the forum. Picking a game that didn’t already have a winning video created for it, will improve your chances. As well as wearing a monocle and a top hat in the video. Just kidding. Or...?

That’s the whole deal - pick a classic game that you love from GOG.com catalogue, tell the internets your "GOGgame Story", get free games. Sounds pretty easy, eh? Well, ladies and gentlemen, start your cameras!

Righteous_Angel: As others have said getting free marketing from your customers and offering very little reward for the effort, no thanks.

This sort of thing doesn't sit well with me.
$50 worth of games is little reward?

The possibility of winning $50 you mean.
Question:

Is commentary mandatory? My english kind of sucks and i feel i can show off the game better with just recoreded footage. Can i just make a music video? Thanks :)

Well, yeah. You see, they get ads that are watched by... uhh, well... mostly their already established customers, and it's quality you'd pay... uhh... probably at least a hundred quid for if you had a professional guy do it. The fact that it's fun for everyone is of no concern here. There's corporate greed about! Greed is bad so I want to get paid for this video of me talking. :p
FRAPS is giving me grief in Raptor, but I'm going to try my best to get a video uploaded!

I'd say yes you need commentary.

Well seeing as it's not a "you must or else" just don't do it. If GOG gets more people from this bonus for them (I bet there are other site out there that do the same thing).

Dammit, I knew I shouldn't have sold my monocole!

Look forward to some interesting videos, hopefully! Oh and actually getting to see some GoGers will be interesting.
Interesting contest.
But cant enter since my main computer is at repair and the oner im using now just dosnt have the power to record and play games at the same time, woud just lag way too much.

Also i dont really know of a great recording software.
I tried fraps but wasnt too impressed and ive heard its better to have recording hardware that you conect to instead of a program that runs in the background.

Watched some the videos posted so far.
Pretty good stuff.
Pleasent voices to listen to, though some of you spoke maybe a bit fast :p

Also, i think il subsribe to deadlyhabit
Good stuff man, good stuff.

That's an interesting idea, but it does it really fit well with the GOGgame Story concept? Contrary to what some users choose to believe, this event isn't about giving GOG.com "cheap advertisement". Nor it is about winning games. It's about sharing your fondest gaming memories, with other people who can appreciate them. I believe most GOG users are such people. I also believe that there's a whole lot of GOG gamers that will have a lot of fun, and maybe some touching moments, making such videos as well. The $50 worth of games shouldn't be seen as the goal here. We handing out those games to you as a bonus incentive. Sure, we ask you to include some mention of our service in your video--but seriously, who wouldn't?

So getting back to your idea, sMull, just keep in mind that the purpose of this whole event is to relay your love for that one special game to your viewers. If you think you can achieve that in a montage with no comment - give it a shot. Especially if you think you'll have a good time making the video.

To answer another question I saw in the comments: no, you don't have to own a GOG.com version of the game you're talking about. Any legal copy will do, as long as the game is available on GOG.com (otherwise there wouldn't be a point to call the video a "GOGgame Story", now would there be?).

If you're concerned about the poison from YouTube trolls, you can always disable the option to comment on your video. I'm sure you'll still get a nice scoop of feedback after posting your work here, in GOG forums--and it would be the good kind, for certain.

As for people who already posted videos: guys, you're amazing. I'm not picking favorites just yet, but I enjoyed your entries very much.

Also - looking at deadlyhabit's Betrayal at Krondor video I realized one thing. Watching scenes from the game you cherish and listening to a commentary by someone that spent hours playing it--just as you did--simply doesn't get boring. I had that when watching James Rolfe's AVGN videos, and now I have that with GOGgame Stories. When deadlyhabit finished his tale, I was still eager to watch some more. So maybe - let's forget about that 2-5 minutes suggestion. Again--it's about your memories. It's not a commercial. Make it as long as you feel it should be.

Oh, and once again about the language thing: I have to insist on your commentary being either English, or subtitled in English if you want to give us a chance to award you. As for the spoken part being inconsistent with the subtitles--I trust you guys enough to be sure, that you won't say anything obscene. ;-)

Peace!

Cheers man, yeah I try to provide a variety of content, be it LPs, to semi reviews or impressions.
As far as recording software, check out Bandicam.
That's what I use, it has a lot more options compared to Fraps (which I previously used), and also encodes on the fly to different formats so saves you the large uncompressed video files eating up your hard drive and having to encode afterwards.

The other thing I do is record my commentary separately with audio software (Cubase in this case as I'm a musician as well) to use various plugins such as compressors and gates to level off my voice and try to clean up room noise (I use a studio condenser mic so it picks up my computer's fan which can get quite annoying).
Then post recording (this is a nice feature of Cubase and most DAWs) is I import the audio from the video file to a second channel, that way I can make sure my voice level compared to in game sound levels are appropriate and one isn't overpowering the other too much.
Then I export the combined audio out and mux it to the video.
So there's a brief idea of how to put together a quality video in most aspects ;)

@G-Doc haha thanks man, and glad to see the time suggestion lifted as I can see others doing the same as I did when the source material is so dear to the heart and brings back so many memories.

It's great watching the entries so far, some for games I've never touched. Seeing people who are passionate about a game even after so many years truly shows why most of these titles stood the test of time, are classics, and why a service like GOG is so invaluable to bringing these games to a new generation.

Hey everyone,

I just made a video for this contest on one of my favorite classic PC games ever.

Battle Chess.

Think I'm gonna go for something way over the top, just for fun.
