frostcircus: Forbidden Siren. It's a good game, but hard to play.
And by that, I mean it's hard to say "I will play Forbidden Siren." It's a punishing, challenging, trying game. I rarely feel like inflicting that upon myself. I rented it three years ago, liked it, bought myself a copy and haven't touched it since.

Correct.
Yeah, it's a very tough game. I think the story is pretty rewarding though, very complex and layered, pretty unusual for a video game. And once you properly understand the mechanics it gets a lot easier. I died about fifty times on the second level, but after I adapted to the games pace the rest went pretty smoothly. Still needed a walkthrough for the puzzles, because they were very obscure.
Still, the brilliantly demented atmosphere is second to none, perhaps Silent Hill, but that's it.

Wait, hang on, is your complaint that you can't recognise the game without.... recognising the game? Because that's not really unusual.
Anyway, Aliasalpha was right.

i am complaining am I? :)
but not that i don't recognize the game but that it is impossible to search the Tube for it. The pic doesn't give any clue whatsoever for what kind of game that is.
So if you didn't play the game you cannot guess the name.
and the whole fun is ruined :)
bah. don't mind me.

It's pretty good. It's different from Uplink because of the way the game is presented. Instead of a sandboxy hacker sim, it is more of a linear mission oriented game. The levels do give you different ways of completing them and can be either easy or hard if you don't snoop around in the places you're not supposed to be in.
A couple things that irk me are the limited amount of times you can bounce through a node and trying to kill your trace costs you money ($500 every time you use killtrace) and the game has a goal of "Have $2000 in your account" and if you have less than that then you can't move on and have to restart the level.
On another note, some servers carry exploits that will sometimes comprise a port on the server that hosts the actual exploit. I know not to expect realism from any hacking sim but that is a little odd for me.
The cool thing about the game is the fact that you get to use your wits more than you did in Uplink. WIth Uplink you could either hack a bank for tons of cash or you could do missions and then just overpower everything with superior hardware. With this game, everything is a tradeoff. Spend money at the wrong time in a level (at least in the beginning) and you could run out of money to bring down your trace level (which, coincidentally, is also tied into the mission objectives - "Lower your trace below 50%").
The interface is a lot cleaner looking and more intuitive. If you want to scan a visible server to refresh your memory about which ports are running what software all you have to do is right click. Also, you can complete the typing of most tasks and server names by pressing the Tab button thus saving yourself the headache of constantly typing the same thing over and over again.
There are also different objectives in the game. You can hack into atms, cell phone networks, traffic control systems and possibly other places. I have seen this within just 2 levels so I have no idea what other places you get to hack into.
Uplink - open ended but with limited hacking.
Hacker Evolution Untold - different bits of technology to hack into but some may be put off by the linear story within the game.
But for 24.95 American you can't go wrong. Oh and there is no DRM on the game other than registering the serial one time with eXosyphen studios. No SecuROM, StarForce, or TAGES.
And there is a demo that doesn't have all the cool features locked out like other demos usually do.
