So I was looking at "The Real Texas" and I was very intrigued by it. So much so that I was considering buying it. Normally when I look at a new game my first thought is, "Will my crappy, slightly updated, 8-year-old laptop be able to handle this game?" Usually the answer is no (except many games on GOG have been an exception to this rule.) Looking at the screenshots for "The Real Texas," that thought never entered into my head. Yet, to be safe, I checked the system requirements. DAMN! I understand that many new indie games use pretty hardcore software for development, but DAMN!

I have run into this problem too many times before. The Whispered World, Edna and Harvey, Sam and Max, Back to the Future, the new Monkey Island...and the list goes on. I guess I am just ranting because one of my favorite genres of games, adventure, is making a hard comeback in the indie market, but I can't play them. This really sucks!

Rant over.

Does it have an Intel GPU, because that's something that qualifies a computer as rubbish. Why Intel hasn't given up is beyond me.

I know your pain but your laptop is 8 years old, man. And it is a laptop...
I can't play that either. The newest thing I can play is TRA, not counting the Torchlight franchise which are freaks of nature.

I doubt that helps but to me its always nice to know someone else somewhere else is just as miserable as you are! :)

The Intel HD 4000 isn't so bad.

Have you tried the adventures of WadjetEye Games or Ben There, Dan That & Time Gentlemen, Please?

8 year old laptop... wow....

I understand people saying they don't like the constant upgrade cycle of PCs, but thats a bit.... yeah....

If its an Intel GPU that old, thats an even worse strike against you.

Agreed - I can max out most games (problems only with those that have daft systme check settings prior to playing). It also surpasses most similarly priced machines for realtime painting in photoshop (a far more demanding task than a lot of games out therer i may add for the sake of doubters and trolls!).
That's just ridiculous, though. Everything I saw in the trailer for that game would be possible on a 486DX2, including the particle effects. Developers have simply become lazy due to the better hardware available to them.

The 3000 is slightly worse but still more decent than one would expect
yea i get what your saying i use a old desktop too, and some of the indie games requirements are way to high for all the gimmicks they offer

That's sort of the point. For Intel it being not so bad is a major accomplishment. For the AMD set, the main restraint on the games I play is the processor speed, I haven't seen a single game that wouldn't run because of my integrated GPU.

Intel has been barely keeping up, if that, since the 3D acceleration really started in earnest in the mid '90s, I think the last time I remember liking their product was a 2D accelerator board.

Also, I can't recall the last time I saw an Intel GPU in a computer that wasn't low end. Normally systems integrators that care about performance will choose and AMD or nVidia chipset for that.
Also, Intel has serious driver problems. I told my GF to get a notebook with an HD3000 becuase I thought it would be enough for her. Well, it is, performance wise, but many games had problems with artifacts, such as Mafia and KOTOR.

So, if you can't afford a notebook with a dedicated card, I say you should still always go with Nvidia or AMD.

Yeah, I know. It actually is my wife's laptop that I hijacked after my laptop crapped out on me. I have a desktop that I built on a very limited budget back in 2006 (not helping my case, I know) and I have been meaning to upgrade it. I just haven't had the money since I became a parent 3 years ago. Not to mention that I don't have a place in my tiny apartment to set it up or work on it.
