Multiple sites (IGN, Kotaku) are reporting that Xbox One will no longer require a once per 24-hour internet connection or a restriction on used games/disc sharing. Pretty remarkable shift of events.

Update:

Microsoft site is now up

confirms the reports.

Would a link be too much to ask? Fine, I'll do it.
Eurogamer

Edit: Eurogamer's Source, and I think origin of the story.

"As an added bonus, region locks would also be dropped."

What exactly is a region lock? If I buy the game from Macedonia, I won't be able to play it while I am in Sweden?

EDIT: Confused about this, because regional stores are present on WP8 and W8, and devs can set regional prices in local currencies and a bunch of other things, but a game or an app bought in one region certainly works in another.

Say you live in the UK and a game comes out earlier in the US and its a good deal cheaper. A region lock prevents you from importing that game and playing it on a UK console.

The PS3 and 360 have the ability to set games to be region free, but few 360 games use it where as most PS3 games do.
Not being able to play Japanese games on EU consoles for instance.
Apparently the MS site which hosts the revised FAQ has been slashdotted. These people can't keep a site up and wanted to be "always online". Meh.
Seems like it's just hope-fueled speculation right now. There will be a change, but undoubtedly it won't be as comprehensive as it needs to be (and right now there's not a lot that they wouldn't have to change about it to entice me).

It will be interesting to see just how much of a compromise MS make on this. But no doubt it won't be total.

Region lcon means you can't import Japanese or U.S games, well you can, they just won't work on your console. Don't think region lock really matters importing from one European countries unless you're Germany importing from Austria due to the severe German laws. Probably wrong though, not too sure about the smaller countries in the east.
I don't expect it to change a thing. They've only taken the first step OUT of people completely abandoning their console for the PS4. Now it's all about the VALUE preposition. What does their machine offer that the PS4 can't? Their services are not together like Sony's and they expect people to pay for everything extra.

That's not how consumers play anymore. I don't think Microsoft understands what "one box to rule them all" means. If they can't consolidate their services and be straight up about DRM, there's no reason to buy their console. I wouldn't do it for the Vita over the same issues, why would I do it for them?

Aha... Since you would need a US card to buy from the US regional store anyways, region lock or not doesn't matter at all.

Meaning, this is for the games that come on physical discs?

news.xbox.com is up. The "Service unavailable" message appears on the page that is currently being updated. What site has been slashdotted?

Edit: and now it appears on the main page as well. Seems like the news spread fast.

An example. I can't buy Batman Arkham City from Steam. It does not even show it to me. However, if I can buy it on GMG and that comes with a Steam activation key, then I can actually activate and play the game. They might not like this though. People used to buy stuff from Russian sites, usually very much cheaper than if they were buying from GMG or Gamefly and I seem to remember they were trying to crack down on this practice.

When I bought the GTX 260 I got a card with a code for Batman Arkham Asylum. I activated it and worked fine however, if I wanted to buy it on Steam, I could not, at that time.

Yeah for disc games. You could buy a disc from any region and it will work in any console world wide.

Not sure if serious about that part. Windows Azure would like to say hello to you with the recently announced "50% of Fortune 500 companies now using Azure for their cloud services".

Not just imports of games but consoles as well. The thought was that they would only let you activate a console from an IP address from an approved country. So essentially if you lived an a non-approved country, like say Macedonia, there would have been no conceivable way to play X1 at all.
