hallowalex78: I hate to be bugging you guys with this, but I reeeaaallly want to play this game:) Could it just be crap on my harddrive? It doesn´t seem like any single option significantly reduces performance, the game just does what it wants... I mean, it is definitly playable, and it looks good too. It just really annoys me...
I have a very similar rig too. Same card. My quad is a tiny bit faster and I have 9 gig RAM.

I am gonna assume you have one card, no Crossfire. No one has mentioned that you DO NOT want the CAP if you are not using Crossfire.
Good to know. No, I do not have crossfire. I think the patch and the CAP came out on the same day, so I just installed both of them and didn´t really think to wonder wich one gave me better performance:)

Hey peeps, I have another problem:D When I reinstalled the game and it detected my specs, it said that I only have like 739 MB VRAM. That´s like, not true.. I´m supposed to have 2gigs of the stuff. Anyone know if this is normal?
The option Texture memory size (mb) set to very large translates into the option TextureMemoryBudget=600 in the config.ini file. Try to change it manually to 1500 or something like that.

Just remember that the file will be overwritten if you go to the config gui and will use low specs for the values manually changed.
Thanks for the tips, dude:) The fps dips to around 25-30 when I´m in towns or I think any place with a lot of people. In other places I get about 35-50. For example, in the tavern of the dwarven town, it took a serious nosedive to 17-24-ish. I tried all of the things you said, and the fps is still low. But it doesn+t stutter like it used to. It runs more consistently than before. Still shit though, considering my hardware.

djlethal: I have pretty much the same setup as you have, and I'm running the game on Ultra with Ubersampling off @ 40-60 FPS.

Is it a specific area you're having trouble with? Or both, say, the forest and towns?
Does the performance decrease DURING gameplay? For example, you start out with 50 FPS and gradually get to 30, without alt-tabbing or restarting the game.

If I were you, I'd try the following things:
1) Uninstall and clean all traces of my video drivers (with Driver Sweeper e.g.)
2) Install a different version of drivers (I'm running 11.4 Catalyst, no problems)
3) Run a chkdsk on C: and game partition, then defragment.
4) Reinstall game from scratch (no mods, no DLC, no patch). DELETE .ini files in Documents/Witcher 2.
5) If game performance is acceptable, start installing patches 1 by 1. Add mods after.

Please take these 5 steps and check back after.

Other things that come to mind are Catalyst AI, mipmapping, forced AA possible settings.
Also, if everything else fails, you can just toy with the .ini to hunt for a "buggy" setting.

Hope it helps!
OK m8, it's time to screw with the .ini then :P

Also, the FPS you mention, is with low settings or what?

Thanks for the tip:) Tried fiddling with the ini, but no improvements. Still runs like a piece of shit:D I´m running on pretty high settings though. All effects on, except for Uber, AntiAlias and SSAO. Shadows on medium, LoD normal. It just annoys me that the game is so poorly optimized. I think this is the only game i´ve had any problems with. Crysis runs fine e.g. The funny thing is that I bought my new GPU especially for this game:)
This is a funny game. My GPU is not as good as the OP's. I have an ATI 5770 HD w/ 1 gig vram. Yet, I can get a rock solid 30 fps (I am using a FPS limiter) with no dips at beyond ultra seetings (.ini edits).

Funny indeed:) It´s really starting to piss me off though, because it really is a good looking game.

you know I had a i7960 and a 8800 GTS. So a decent CPU (made 2 years ago) and a very old graphic card (made in 2007). I run the game on normal. The only option I put down is very high downscale texture.

others have given you good advise. Sorry for the very bad experience

Hey, I just thought of something. Could you possibly paste your settings from the ini file, so we can see if I missed anything? If nothing, then just for comparison:)
I will when I get home tonight.

Thanks, man:) I really hate computers sometimes... I´d just like to call the developers and tell them to, like, make a game that f*****g works:P

Typing on tablet so apologies if this reads oddly.

Are you certain that you're hardware is okay? If you don't have it installed already, you should grab GPUZ. It has a video card monitor that runs in the background. That way you can see if your card is being throttled. Heat would trigger this, but the card might be throttling itself if it gets worried about power consumption hurting the hardware. This is especially true if by 6970 you mean a 6950 that you've unlocked. In CCC under the Power tab there is a slider whose name I cannot remember that could help. Sorry about the name bit but it is the one that piques at twenty percent. Beyond that, I'm not sure if ulps plays a role in non-crossfire systems but you may want to google it as well. If you have a sapphire card, then trixx makes it easy to disable.

Your CPU could be throttling if it is getting too hot so grabbing something like Realtemp could be useful. You could also throw AMD Monitor into the mix. It works on intel systems and can let you watch CPU vs GPU usage as well as letting you assure all cores are working.
Need an edit option. :P. The mystery bar is in the over clocking section, and directly above the manual fan setting. Drag it all the way to the right.
