Opoona

Opoona (2007)

by ArtePiazza, Koei
Genres:Role-playing (RPG), Platform, Puzzle
Themes:Action, Fantasy, Comedy, Science fiction
Game modes:Single player
Story:While on an interplanetary family vacation, the young boy Opoona crash lands on Planet Landroll after his spaceship is involved in a mysterious accident. Separated from his family, Opoona is forced to live alone. On the planet, Opoona must find a job, search for his siblings, and defend himself and the people of Landroll against creatures known as the Dark Rogues. Luckily for Opoona, he is the descendant of a long line of warriors known as the Cosmo Guards. Thus, Opoona’s adventure begins as he struggles to establish a new life and reunite his family. The game’s action-oriented battle system lets players use powerful “Energy Bonbons” against their enemies. Using just the Nunchuk, players can manipulate an Energy Bonbon’s trajectory in a number of different ways. All of Opoona’s commands are also controlled by the Nunchuk, to allow a complete “single-hand control” of the game. Opoona is not just about battling; it is a “Lifestyle RPG.” As Opoona, players must adapt to a new environment, meet new people, and contribute to society through work, all while becoming aware of the precious world and people around him. As the game progresses, Opoona will develop relationships and uncover a broader range of activities including new jobs and clues to new adventures.Show more

This is not a perfect game. I got lost and had to use a guide on quite a few occasions. However, if you can look past that, you are left with a game that has beautiful environments, cute character designs and a downright gorgeous soundtrack! I have stopped way too many times just to think "how the heck did they make a place this pretty on the nintendo wii!"
One of my absolute favorite games on the Wii! I was interested in the game when Hitoshi Sakimoto and his crew at Basiscape composed the soundtrack, which, is otherworldly and reminds me of Phantasy Star Online in some aspects. There were rumblings from Artepiazza back in 2017 that something was happening with possibly a remaster for Switch or even a sequel, but nothing has ever been announced. Guessing because they've been busy co-developing the Dragon Quest and SaGa games of late. Opoona reminds me a bit of EarthBound, with its charm and a game that kinda allows you to do whatever you want within reason. I would love to see it cleaned up and given some new features like escaping from battles, a playtime counter, and maybe an easier way to figure out where to go because the beginning can be very confusing on what you're supposed to do. Overall, Opoona is a treasured gem in my collection and Artepiazza still posts sometimes talking about the game, but Koei is the publisher and unless someone else helps out (maybe Nintendo could publish), we might not see anything else as it didn't sell too well.

Stonekeep: Bones of the Ancestors
Stonekeep: Bones of the AncestorsStonekeep: Bones of the Ancestors is a video game developed by Alpine Studios and published by Interplay Entertainment for the Nintendo Wii in 2012. The game is the second game released in the Stonekeep series, although it is not Stonekeep 2, a game that was cancelled after five years of development, but rather a new game based on the original. The game was released through the WiiWare online distribution system, Interplay's second game of the kind, after MDK2 HD, to positive sales, but largely negative critical reception.
