First and foremost, we want to thank our incredible community for their unwavering support. From voting on the GOG Dreamlist to the 22,000 passionate fans who helped bring Breath of Fire IV back: this release is as much your achievement as it is ours. And with an amazing partner like Capcom by our side, we couldn’t have asked for a better team.

April 27th 2000, Breath of Fire IV first captured hearts as one of Capcom’s most beloved RPGs. 25 years later, it returns – revived by popular demand and fully updated for modern PCs, this iconic classic is now available DRM-free on GOG!

The game joins the GOG Preservation Program with essential upgrades: our enhanced version is fully optimized for modern systems, with Windows 10 and 11 compatibility. Players can enjoy both English and Japanese localizations, along with improved graphics powered by an upgraded DirectX renderer, new display options like Windowed Mode, V-Sync, Anti-Aliasing and refined gamma correction for better visuals. The audio engine has also been upgraded, restoring missing environmental sounds and adding new configuration options.

This is the ultimate way to experience Breath of Fire IV like never before – now, to celebrate on its silver anniversary, and for years to come!

You can read more information about Breath of Fire IV in our blog article, HERE.

But that’s not all – while Breath of Fire IV releases with your help, a variety of other games, all of them absolute PC-gaming pioneers, and all of them over 20 years old – join the GOG Preservation Program. Among those gems, you will find Ultima™ Underworld 1+2, as well as Ultima™ 9 and with that addition, the entirety of Ultima™ series is now preserved and available within the Program.

Here’s the full list:
Ultima™ Underworld 1+2
Ultima™ 9
Worlds of Ultima™ : The Savage Empire
Ultima™ Worlds of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams
Worms: Armageddon
Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood
Realms of the Haunting
Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon
Stonekeep

As technology advances, too many classics risk being lost to time; and we know it all too well. Let’s keep making games live forever, together!

paladin181: What in the actual fuck GOG? You know peoples' wallets can't tolerate these quality releases all at once!

GOG.com: and with that addition, the entirety of Ultima™ series is now preserved and available within the Program.

paladin181: No, you're missing Ultima X.
Very funny. Ultima X was canceled before release. It doesn't exist.

EverNightX: Is this just emulated? Doesn't look like any widescreen support.
This is the original 2003 PC version of the game so it's not emulation.

The game was released before widescreen monitors became standard so 4:3 is it's correct screen ratio.

As it is said above it is the original PC port running under wrapper for quality and compatibility reasons.
The original was 4:3 only, but ingame you can select even your desktop resolution. but obviously stretched. Not proper widescreen.

Nice to see GOG starting to switch some games to DOSBox Staging now.

Praise GOG! \O/

Matt-S: This is something I've been wondering - is there anything that GOG has ported over that didn't have some form of PC release in the past? I would love to see a lot of console exclusives make their way here but not sure if it's ever happened through one of GOG's programs.
Apparently we might be getting some emulated Neo Geo games: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/gog_in_the_mediainterviews/post435

Breja: Wow! No way! ...

...

I have no idea what this is.
I've been into gaming since 1989. and i've never heard of this game. :D

Still, i'm glad whenever a classic game comes to GOG.
Wow, what a bombshell. I just wish Bandai Namco and Square Enix would be as helpful with bringing beck their classics to GOG (especially RPGs) as Capcom.
GOG and the new Dreamlist are slappin` at the moment. Thank you for another awesome release. Keep it up :) Chers
Unfortunately, the GOG version is very raw. Basically almost the old version with a wrapper attached, not much more i assume. It got no controller support and it is producing abnormal CPU load which is confusing because i would understand it if the game is running unlocked at 3000 FPS at such a load, but it is running in 30 FPS. I know not a single game with such a high CPU load... it is like a benchmark. It definitely will have to be fixed because it is a coding failure.

I will test it on my old Notebook now... will be interesting to see how it looks on this old Intel CPU.

I've only found out about this game last year sometime (I believe) and it looked like quite the gem. So I'm very glad to see it here on GOG and released with such care, going by the PP updates. :)

Not to mention the release price is very nice, so I'll be buying it. This is the perfect icing on the cake (to an already excited community) to tempt day one buys. :)

As far as I know the game supports gamepads of any style and you can switch vsync via the wrapper app

Just played it with my Logitech F710 controller and it worked fine, just waited a few seconds on the title screen then it saw the controller.
Testing it on my old Notebook now, the CPU is not getting any high load there... just the usual load. It gets like 10 times the load on my 7800 X3D, i know no single game with this issue, it is the first one.

Actually, a single other game, Oceans Heart, got something comparable which was due to bad coding of its engine (the dev would have to update the engine, which he never did) and it was affecting any CPU. There was a workaround, i had to add "lua console = no"... on the EXE.

Anyway, the issue on the GOG game remains unknown, but it seems GOG was not testing it with the currently most performant CPUs for gamers. It is very unlikely caused by my system with up to date drivers.

Besides, the drivers on my Notebook are totally crap... never ever updated, and not even a real GPU inside. It surely is no driver issue. The GPU is with near zero load... it is only affecting the 7800 X3D.

A single core usually never got more than 8 W at peak, no matter the game. Here it goes to near 15 W a core which is totally insane... it is like the CPU is doing 10 times the work of my Notebook-Intel CPU. My Notebook got no active cooling and nothing... CPU does not go above 55 C here.

The rendering is D3D9 but it matters nothing, because it is a CPU issue.
