As I mentioned I have to do with it every day working for the government.
RWarehall: It's funny especially since the EU are the ones which required online stores to use Geo location on their users so that EU taxes go to the right place.
The IP of every user is automatically transmitted so others will get it everytime you don't use a VPN. No privacy breach in reading an IP transmitted openly. RWarehall: It's also Germany with the strict age requirements for games, which presumably stores must check individuals IDs to buy games.
It's up to you if you show those credential necessary for buying such games online or offline. There are enough games (and movies) available without having the need to prove your age at all. RWarehall: Getting an IP address, then sending a subpoena to the service provided has been used many times before. In fact, even VPNs have been given a subpoena in some cases, revealing who used their service especially in the cases of terrorism. Whether a small company really benefits by jumping through all these hoops is another question...
Even in case of terrorism this is sill a controversial topic (at least in Germany). And we are not at all talking about a threat to citizens here we are talking about theft at best. RWarehall: And for the record, no one has to prove anything 100% for a court case. I don't know where all of you get that from. To start a court case, a plaintiff in almost every country needs to show reasonable cause. I'm pretty sure that a pirated copy phoning home from a specific IP meets that criteria.
And still they would have to provide any proof that the copy in question in fact is a pirated copy. I still wonder how they would do this with a database they built on their own using a software they developed by their own.Post edited February 21, 2018 by MarkoH01
