Can anything really top the nightmareish brutality of the deaths in the first Prince of Persia? :D

Actually, I seem to notice at least in terms of sex and violence, my tastes have remained the same since even my teenage years.

Speaking of Prince of Persia, THIS made me cringe even in my late teens, worried not that my parents would think I'm porning out, but because I was worried of what they'd think of gaming in general :D.

wpegg: I'm not sure many people actually really "like" the bloody games.
Then why do game companies keep making more games that seem to have more blood and violence as time goes by? A company wouldn't make a violent, bloody game unless there were paying customers who wanted that very "feature".

Quentin Tarantino for instance. He makes violent, bloody movies not because movies like that are high quality, but because he knows there are people out there who want to see that kind of thing and pay money to see it, which he gets a portion of.

As long as there is a market for such things, they will exist. Give the people what they want and all that.

But Terraria has violent killing of innocent bunny rabbits and ducks. In fact most things can explode into gore.

Anyway, no, I'm more desensitized than ever. I have less tolerance for some aspects of game design now, such as shameless sexploitation, but that's because I'm not an immature idiot teen anymore.
I still like combat but I don't like the graphic depiction of suffering or violent harm/gore, especially with modern graphics.

It also depends on how it's presented. I didn't mind it as much in Doom.

When I was a kid I actually didn't play early Japanese fighting games because I was turned off by the anime-ness of it. Now though I prefer Japanese fighting games to Mortal Kombat in part because I hate how retarded the violence has become in MK. To this day I still have not seen a single fatality (from the new games) on any female in MK outside of thumbnails or brief bits of youtube videos. When they get done on me I usually look away or shut off the monitor.

I'm losing my taste for the gym as I get older

fortune_p_dawg: it's like a switch went off in my head over the last couple years, and being in my mid-30s has turned me into a sissy.
Well, I'm now too in my mid-30s and I have been playing from early 1990s. What can I say? With time your favorite games genres changes - what I liked 10 years ago is not interesting now, but now I like other games. For example: ten years ago I HATED roguelike games, and now I really like FTL and Bedlam. Back then I loved Bioware RPGs like Dragon Age and now it is not as interesting as it was back then. With every year pass by your tastes change, not only in games, but also movies and food. And this is normal. It would be quite boring if tastes didn't changed with age. :)
Nope, my tastes have stayed the same all throughout. Violence, I never cared (although the newer Mortal Kombat stuff is kinda disgusting/hard), swearing I never liked, sex I never wanted in games.

You're not meant to eat the gym.
Not really. Senseless violence will never lose its charm :D. Of course, it also depends on the game, but usually I don't mind. To be honest, contrast tends to put me off me more than actual (extreme/exaggerated) violence... for instance "Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons" took things a bit too far if you ask me.

I actually think it's all for the same reason. The emperor isn't wearing any clothes, but nobody wants to admit it. Especially kids.
Not really. A favorite game of mine as a kid was Commander Keen, and for years now I've been yearning for a more hardcore, possibly even violent re-imagining of the series. And using a more 'realistic' artstyle

Oh no, not another "gritty reboot". Blergh.

Coming next, Tintin in North Korea. Watch as Snowy gets decapitated, Captain Haddock is tortured with billions of blue blistering barnacles, and Tintin haz a sad. All with dark, gritty backstory, dark, shaky camerawork, and trendy new soundtrack. :)

Not in the least. It depends on the genre of game though.

Did you know that in both Postal 2 and Deus Ex you can do a complete playthrough without killing a single person?
