TARFU: Did you know that in both Postal 2 and Deus Ex you can do a complete playthrough without killing a single person?
actually I did know that XD
I haven't played all that many violent games. But I love cartoonish violence. My current fave is Gorn:

Andrey82: With every year pass by your tastes change, not only in games, but also movies and food. And this is normal. It would be quite boring if tastes didn't changed with age. :)
Took the words right out of my mouth! I agree. Our tastes change and evolve, not only due to time, but also due to life experiences, our current state of mind, what gives us pleasure at the present moment, etc. I believe it's natural.

Example: a gamer friend of mine who for the longest time loved gory horror first-person shooters, now works at Intensive Care Unit for the last three years and he does not play these games anymore. His taste in music and movies have changed too.

I always liked violence in the Doom/Quake/MK sense of it, not so much in the Horror genre sense of it.

But a couple of years ago I was watching Mezzo Forte and thinking, "Wow, this is a nice anime, but the excessive violence and sex kinda work against it".

The biggest change I had gaming wise throughout the years is that I used to be very much into long cut scenes and nowadays I rarely ever have patience for them.
Kinda.
But I never was into violent games in the first place.

I think it's more that I want to sit down and enjoy a cozy story, and Shootbang of Tom Clancy's Conspiracy IV isn't going to be that.

And when was the last time there wasn't a half-athed sports game that allowed for an actual story?

Ditto to most racing games.

At least with simulations you can make stories. Here in ye old Fezzwick, there was a company founded in 1800, seeking to become a Transport Tycoon.

Matewis: Not really. A favorite game of mine as a kid was Commander Keen, and for years now I've been yearning for a more hardcore, possibly even violent re-imagining of the series. And using a more 'realistic' artstyle

TARFU: Oh no, not another "gritty reboot". Blergh.

Coming next, Tintin in North Korea. Watch as Snowy gets decapitated, Captain Haddock is tortured with billions of blue blistering barnacles, and Tintin haz a sad. All with dark, gritty backstory, dark, shaky camerawork, and trendy new soundtrack. :)
Don't forget the FREEDOM TM, surround sound, big explosions, CGI sequences, lesbians and strategic positioning of people deemed minorities. Also can't forget Rambo coming to save the day and slaughtering over 2000 Koreans to do so.

Luckily theres a cut version, where all the sex part is removed. The strange thing about Mezzo Forte, is that it has ridiculously better animation during the sex scenes, than during the rest of the anime. The guy should have just done a full hentai and be done with it.

In fact, considering that the unrated version of Mezzo Forte is quite rare, you have only yourself to blame. ;)

On topic: Recently I have added two games to my list of masterpiece games I've played. In fact I'm still playing them. Halcyon 6, which has some brutal death animations for the ground battles, and Wonder Boy: The dragon's trap, which is as pure and harmless as a baby's psyche.

So it doesn't seem to have affected me, but then again I've never played Postal or Quake 4. My experience with Quake is limited to the first one.

I was never a big fan to begin with. Some combat (preferably melee) is alright, but just like with movies, I don't really enjoy gore.
