Darvond: Also, the terminal isn't scary. Heck, most terminal commands are better documented than their GUI counterparts. Just man a command and read the pages as you demand.
It is scary in the sense that it doesn't guide you and present you choices like a GUI would. It is a powerful tool if you know what you are doing but a newbie doesn't. And he doesn't learn anything if he is just copy-pasting commands in there. I only began to understand what they mean when I found the graphical representation for the task. Humas are visual animals after all. From there on I started to appreciate the terminal, as I now had a rough idea of whats going on in my OS.
I STILL use Vista as my 32 bit compatibility dual boot. I use it even though I also hsve XP, Vista is better than XP as long as you have the extra hardware requirements- which everyone now does pretty much. Even the nagging can be turned off if you research how to do it.

I tried to move to Win 7 (twice), but it had more compatibility issues and was more sluggish on my PC than Vista. So that is why I just stuck with Vista as my main OS all the way up until the start of this year! And it ran absolutely every thing I ever threw at it- including games that had issues on Win 7 that ran fine on Vista.

But finally switched my main OS to Win 10 this year and it has been awesome, best Windows since Win 98. So RIP Vista.

windows 10 is bad, inconsistent UI and bad compatibility with previous software.

vidsgame: I do hope though, that Linux does get way better and more stable because Microsoft seems to be headed in the opposite direction and they of course, have no concern for their users.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place or at least that seems imminent to be the case soon.

Darvond: Linux has been rock solid for over 20 years. Red Hat, Debian, Slack, and others have already walked the long path. New distros and gimmick distros tend to yank things in odd directions against the cloth.

Also, the terminal isn't scary. Heck, most terminal commands are better documented than their GUI counterparts. Just man a command and read the pages as you demand.

I just ran a CLI update and it took the whole of a few seconds to check.
They are solid but the reliance on Wine could be an issue as there is no alternative. Being unable to run the majority of the games on Linux without Wine is a huge issue because Wine updates and I have found that those at least break one game.

Terminals depend on who you talk to. There is no denying they have a learning curve no matter how well documented they are. I have read tons of man pages and they do little to help me learn anything. Most of the time, I have to ask someone in the Linux forums so someone could break down what the man means and what command I'm looking for.

I'm talking about Microsoft's broken updates. Linux is looking better by the day because of that because Microsoft is breaking things that should have no problems working. Linux is perfectly usable for desktop, home internet and even home theatre.

However, I have spent a year making it work for games and I'm talking about old games from GOG. I was unsuccessful, so instead I use Mint for home theatre purposes which worked out perfectly with no issues. Coming from Windows there is no way I could know my way around a command line without having experience with it or constantly having to ask people and then wait for an answer.

ChrisGamer300: Microsoft can go fuck themselves after all shit they keep pulling to force you to abandon older OS'es. first auto downloaded W10 without saying, then force it in on the hardware you buy and the list goes on endlessly and now finally this.

I long for the day when i can go over to my Linux machine permanently without having so many developers ignoring it or using Steam.
Yeah and Fuck up 15 years of all your save files because they monkey fucked the install and only 5% of everything worked!
I'll never understand the hate for MS when the free alternative, like Linux, is the most self-incomatible OS ever.

Therefore I'd recommend to create individual wine-prefixes for each application that don't get updated. It's quite easy to do with a graphical front end like Play On Linux or Lutris.

It's still a lot more effort needed than on windows obviously but that is to be expected if you try to run a game on an unsupported OS.

Windows is easy to use while Linux is not?
Life long Windows user here.

All the hate on Windows 10 comes from the fact that the normally available versions don't let you control much (Home, Pro). I got my hands on the Education version via the school I studied and still use it. I can manually control updates, disable tracking and analytics practically completely (can go to telemetry level 0), edit group policies with extended options and many more. I don't need to have a Microsoft account and can download and install updates whenever I want. If I wanted, I wouldn't have to update for a year. You then just have to do a few more minor tweaks (like disable Cortana completely through registry or in group policy) and you can block/disable pretty much any communication with Microsoft. Then, Win 10 is okay to use.

Enterprise is almost the same as Education.
That said, these versions are not normally available and thus the hate on Win 10 is somewhat justifiable.

And Windows 7 is still by far the best Windows I've had the pleasure to experience. It had amazing compatibility with old games, its UI was simple and effective and it most resembled my old favorite; Windows 98. But then my MOBO failed and had to get a new one and because of that, I installed the Win 10 for the already mentioned HW compatibility. But it has to be said that if I couldn't get my hands on the Education version, I probably would have stayed with Win 7.

Gekko_Dekko: -an invalid command-
Not quite the correct procedure, but there is basic documentation explaining the concept included with most distros.

johnnygoging: as someone who moved to Vista after SP1, I always found that OS to be rock fucking solid and easily the best version of Windows I had seen up to that point.

UAC was sensible, people just didn't like the nagging.

Aero looked good, hardware vendors just always gouged so people didn't have the hardware to run aero well.

Vista majorly improved sound capabilities.

and while we hate Microsoft for good reasons, Microsoft has always produced quality work and it's 100% true what sweet, sweet mighty Gaben said about them. he said there was a lot of pride in their work, that there was a lot of craft knowledge built and accumulated. even when you factor the disorganization and the lack of any consistently persistent powerful motivation of free software, it still is somewhat surprising that given the share of people working on that that Microsoft is still as prevalent as it is. I don't think that was a fluke or all down to shady business practices. those definitely helped, but there was a great bunch of engineers fueling that beast.

nightcraw1er.488: Can I have some of the drugs you are on? Vista is far and away the worst operating system ever invented. My mum only just stopped using so I have recent experience of it, and it is like someone pulling your nails off it is that bad. I would rather go back to monoliths than ever have to go near that piece of crap ever again. And don't take my word for it, listen to the IT guys:

I disagree,Vista on all the other pc's was fine by me.

I would rather tattoo data on my genitalia using a rusty blunt nail than use vista.
Nope, actually I can't think of any scenario in this life or the next which would ever convince me to use it now I have finally smashed the machine containing it. I even smashed the discs so they could never be used again, and then I burnt the remains and scattered the ash to the four winds, I was feeling quite merciful to the worst OS ever inflicted on the world... of a day goes by where I don't dream of smashing it all over again.

Agreed. Vista was terrible but Windows 8 was even worse.

johnnygoging: ...
That's how it has always been. All these people calling Windows 7 the best OS Microsoft has ever made, will be forced to make the jump to Windows 11, or whatever the next one is called. And they'll believe it, to be so much better than their perceived failings of Windows 10, even though most would have surely been fixed. I personally noticed it happening with Win98, WinXP and now with Win7. I've never had any experience with Vista or 8, so I can't comment on these.

Early adopters of new Windows OSes have always faced problems, but those are usually fixed after the first year. What's left are those "features"(forced updates), that simply have become the new norm from now on. No matter how much you hate them, you'll still have to deal with them eventually.
