SirPrimalform: It's not not MIDI though. MIDI is a music protocol, not a sound generation method. There's nothing preventing Adlib music from being stored in the MIDI format.
Yeah, I had actually talked a bit out of my ass there as it had not occurred to me that the files holding actual compositions for AdLib cards are based on MIDI notation. I guess if a composer modelled his instrument bank after General MIDI the files would actually play back properly on AdLib and General MIDI devices.

Yeah that's a good point. After all General MIDI is more or less just a convention for what instrument goes in which patch number. There's nothing stopping a composer from also arranging their FM patches in the same order. Of course MIDI meant for Adlib might have extra MIDI CC instructions for adjusting the patches on the fly. Not sure what they would do to a module/card using General MIDI.
