snowkatt: metal gear solid V made 179 million in one day http://gamerant.com/metal-gear-solid-5-sales-day-one/
care to run that past me again ?
konami left the console business because they chose to do so

and they are on their way to a long slow suicide march for some reason
cause a company that has a franchise that can haul in 179 million in one day normally wouldnt abandon a business model with these numbers
and keep in mind this was just 8 months ago

so yes the konami bashing is justified
While MGS V made them a boatload of money, their other properties were far more hit or miss. And MGS V was still a rather expensive game for them to make, one that, had it not been well received, could have failed to make a profit. It's unlikely that it would have bombed completely, with the Metal Gear Solid name attached to it, but making only a modest profit on a game can actually be worse than not making a game to begin with, if you consider the infrastructure you need to keep in place to actually produce games. And this is where I suspect the reason for their decision comes from. While they could periodically produce games that would end up selling well, there's a lot of things "behind the scenes" that costs money.

That said, the reason why they ended up here is because they've been making bad decisions for a long time now. They've been out of touch with the market, consistently releasing games that fail to live up to expectations and because of this they've decided to put their effort elsewhere.

Elmofongo: More stupid Konami bashing :P

Its capitalism. If people bought more games like Silent Hill Downpour they would still be in the console buisness.

But everone prefered playing games like Amnesia and Five Night's at Freddy's so Silent Hill is now irrelevent :P

omega64: I'd rather not have any games if Downpour and Homecoming are the alternative. xD
Downpour is not so bad, it just isn't a masterpiece like the old Silent Hills.
I doubt they can do something better than SH2.
And bad or mediocre games doesn't necessarily kills the franchise, Sonic is still alive even after a ton of crappy games.
If instead of making movies to increase interest in Silent Hill, they used that money to create a great game...

Yeah, it's more a loss of good IPs than a loss of future quality games at this point.

I liked the first film...
Though a lot of it was due to the atmosphere and special effects.

The second one was terrible though.

Yeah, the worst part is that we're unlikely to see re-releases of some of their back catalogue. I would low to see Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2 on GOG/Steam/wherever (with some fixes). Those did get PC-releases.

And Lords of Shadow 1 & 2. Mercurysteam is former Rebelact studios, devs of Blade of Darkness, which was here and got removed!

I really did not care about Lords of Shadow 1 (the bigger enemies were far too damage spongy), but I would not be opposed to seeing them here. They are at least available online though.

Smannesman: Heh.. to who?
To anyone who bought the Silent Hill HD Collection.
Konami's been going that way a long time. They've decided they don't like video games and want to play with their balls instead. So be it.

Metal Gear Solid V is apparently quite good, but one quite good game in a sea of horrible working conditions, worker harrasment and bad consumer practices does not a good company make. Good riddance I say.

Then again, I never were a big fan of their recent stuff, I can see where people are upset with them withdrawing from trying to make the occasional not that bad move. MGS V might be good, but selling a demo for it at the prince point they did was just stupid.

P.T. Got people really excited for the next silent hill, so of course the best decision was to axe it.

Castlevania Lords of shadows wasn't too painful to play through, it was an almost okay implementation of a game I'd play several times done better beforehand. Apparently the sequel went downhill.

Metal Gear Solid 2 on the PC...I could almost run it on max when I got it. Since then, every PC upgrade I'd gotten required me to lower the settings just a bit more to avoid glitches (I got something very close to what Ubisoft emulated with Unity and the skinless faces years before in MGS2)

Apocalyptica on the PC was an interesting take no one played, with half-realised gameplay. It wouldn't launch on my PC, support asked me to reinstall my computer from scratch, get the latest drivers, reinstall again. And when that failed to work closed the ticket with "Sorry we can't help you, we hope you'll enjoy the game."
As it turned out, it was their copy protection which bluescreened my computer.

Shadow of memories. While a good game...It felt horribly janky, making the Dark Souls initial PC release look highly polished in comparison.

Last game I really liked from them was Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles on the PSP, mainly because it came with an unlockable copy of Symphony of the night in it.

So yeah, I'm not upset they've left the business. They were great. Not anymore. Hopefully this makes it possible for the talented developers still left there to see there's no reason to hang about a place where any amount of loving and hard work in a game would get stifled by management anyway. Hopefully we'll see new interesting good stuff from them.

And in the meantime. Stop being so serious and have a good laugh at the antics as Konami finds new ways to play with their balls. And maybe soon you can have a Bomberman vegetable crisper, and Silent Hill Tamagochi pet where you have to feed James horrors till you break him. Or they could team up with Ubisoft and announce that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is going to be a ringtoss game targeted to whatever replaced Chuck'e'cheese.

Oh, I liked the first movie too, I didn't mean it was bad.
One of the few movies about a game which I liked.
Still, I wouldn't have minded if they had used all that money to make a good sequel to Silent Hill 4, instead.
It was not a good call, imo. Too soon.
Warcraft had years and years of sucess, making millions and millions of dollars, before Blizzard decided to make a movie about it.
They have zero risk of ruining their company, or Warcraft, even if the movie is awful.
If they wanted to attract more players, they could've spend much less by making books instead of movies (that last one, was money thrown at the trash can, it's a complete piece of shit).

While a single bad/mediocre game won't kill a franchise, the only reason why Sonic is not a reviled franchise at this point is because the Sonic games defined so many peoples childhood. Had the Mega Drive Sonic titles not been so well received back in the days, I'm sure the cavalcade of crap that has been the Sonic series since he went into the 3rd dimension would have basically killed any prospects of the series being well regarded.

And did the Silent Hill movie really cost them any money? Was that one not handled by some major film studio that payed them for the licence?

Never hear about that.
Did that happen for both movies?
there are too many pubs and devs these days that got full retard.
