Ancient-Red-Dragon: I've haven't been following this game, but it seems to be receiving middling reviews. Why is that? Is it actually bad? Or are people just bashing the game unfairly?
avatar
Dogmaus: It's the people being unfairly bashed by the game.
There's no fair or unfair. Some people like certain games or controls and some don't. If you ask me it's purely subjective.
Thank you!
Thanks for the GA.

Never tried a game like this before.

Canuck_Cat: How is it not a solution? You segment your junk mail from your real email, which is what most intermediate users have been doing for years. What on earth is GOG going to do with that telemetry for the time between subscribing and unsubscribing? And how much data is a throwaway email account actually worth?
avatar
B1tF1ghter: It's not, it's very simple why.
It's because it does not change the fact that you are sharing something, it only changes which account you share it from.
Also, it's pretty hilarious that majority seems to think that the only thing they get with this is the email address.
This isn't some sort of gaming news site where you subscribe to a newsletter - where doing so would net them mostly the email address (aside from IP and script based analytics data) - here you are doing this while logged in to whatever account you are using and EVERYTHING resolving around telemetry of that account can amount to general "consumer profile" shared with "partners" - and if you don't use VPN, different browser agent, and a bunch of other obfuscation methods when "hopping accounts" then it's very easy to associate info from one account with info from another - and before you say "they cannot" - watch them do that under guise of "telemetry for the sake of better user experience" - and since GOG does not follow many privacy rules in general then they are pretty likely to aggregate such "similarly looking" data from same IP address.
Also, pixel trackers, and 3rd party telemetry/analytics scripts being loaded within those html-based emails.

The exact scope of what is being collected is not specified anywhere (which fact is a GDPR violation by itself).
And it's definitely much more than just email address even solely because of the fact of account login.
There also seems to be general lack of a form for data deletion which the lack of it is a GDPR violation btw.

avatar
Canuck_Cat: Also, why do you keep on CAPITALIZING certain WORDS? Every time you POST like this, I feel like I'm back on FACEBOOK again reading a family member or friend's POLITICAL RANT and I'm more INCLINED to DISMISS it.
avatar
B1tF1ghter: Actually, I am doing so because it's way faster than using GOG's BB code.
The explanation is that simple.

avatar
Canuck_Cat: This writing style (...) damages your CREDIBILITY.
avatar
B1tF1ghter: Only for those people who *somehow* get offended by this.

avatar
Canuck_Cat: This writing style suggests UNHINGED mentality
avatar
B1tF1ghter: Do you REALLY think this could be the only reason for someone to write like this?
I got profoundly tired of using BB code on specificly GOG forums due to it's cumbersomeness and the fact that GOG's CMS does not auto complete those when you forget even one (if you do then CMS will just either hang indefinitely and not post your post or it will screw the entire message from open tag onwards if closing tag is missing), so I eventually mostly stopped using it in favor of using capitals for the same purpose.

avatar
Canuck_Cat: Weren't you taught this internet etiquette back in primary or middle school?
avatar
B1tF1ghter: I don't know in what country you attended those, but such things were certainly not taught in my schools, certainly not at the time when I attended them anyway (which was a LONG time ago).
Also at the time when I was in those internet at private households was not as popular in that specific country (in which I was then) as it is now.

avatar
apehater: dear gog management i prefer to NOT pay with my data for free stuff, the same goes for stuff i've paid for!

so would you mind and STOP to try to f*ck me in the *ss!!!!!!!!
avatar
B1tF1ghter: Don't worry, GOG forum community will gladly do that in GOG's stead by mass-downvoting you (and people with same point of view) solely because you have a different take on privacy than them ;)

avatar
twillight: I'd prefer over giveaways accessibility to the library.
I mean who still has winXP and other such OP nowdays? But ton of games are locked in that vault.
avatar
B1tF1ghter: What are you talking about?
The first 2 games definitely do work on Windows systems in between XP and 10.
And if they don't work on 10 then it's not really devs fault per se - devs made these games very long time ago - and it's Microsoft that keeps dropping libraries people are actually using and need them for running older software.

avatar
twillight: Also, please someone standardize the hardware-requirements please, because the whole industry is very anti-consumer, and just pushes you to those sites even just to test the bloody games, so you don't waste your money on something that'll just not work on your machine.
avatar
B1tF1ghter: Yes, well, as long as there will not be any platform enforced guidelances in regards to that then that predicament will continue.
All well and good, but tracking data hidden in the HTML of an email can't proc if you don't open or preview the email. Unless something tells the code to go, it doesn't. That's like telling me that someone coded a virus, and him reading the code out loud has infected our systems. I know you're particular about your privacy, but you're also a little paranoid. Code can't just activate from nothing; HTML has to be parsed to do anything.
As the subforum is kind of dead, just thought id ask here and find out if anybody has reached a trader yet - my inventory is getting full of duplicate items and i can't seem to find a way to get rid of them, so assume theres a means to sell them down the line

Just accidentally finished the game and got forced into new game plus without any option to say no :/... Still had several areas completely unexplored and BOOM, the game suddenly ends. All I can say is, don't do what you're told to do once you get 100% data collection...

From what I could tell, the only thing to do with them is break them down into materials. That being said, I haven't crafted a single item during my playthrough.

It was a joke, but it's very difficult from the beginning. In the reviews there's a complain that I found true in my struggles, that shields are too slow and dodging makes you vulnerable. If it wasn't a freebie already I would strongly reccomend tryiing the demo before buying it to see if one is up for the task. Also, having your previous dead self joining the enemies punishes you for failing, and you will find yourself in a vicious circle. But I think I've read in the desciption that in the complete game it's possible to ask help online from other players and divide the spoils of the fight. That might help in those desperate situations where one is stuck in a fight and keeps dying over and over.
I never played dark souls, but i have bloodbourne and its not my kinda game, but since this is free this is a good reason to attempt to get into souls like games despite the fact i had bloodbourne for 5 years and still haven't finished it.Thank you gog!
avatar
TZODnmr2k5: Now, THIS is a freebie!
And an excellent one to boot, as this has a 3.9 rating here so it's not a throwaway title!
avatar
Oddeus: For me it´s a clear 4.7 title. I loved every minute of the game. If you like the gigeresque scifi theme and don´t mind a bit of grinding, you will love the game too.
Yep, this game was highly regarded by a lot of reviews, though the overall score was brought down by .4 points due to a lot of one-star reviews... I'll reserve judgment for myself until I had a chance to play it!

TomNuke: You do realize SmollestLight told you the exact reason why they made the change, correct?
SmollestLight did not in any way explain why the change was made, because nothing that was mentioned has changed. That was all true before they started requiring marketing consent for giveaways, and is why the marketing e-mails exist in the first place. In fact, I believe marketing e-mails are enabled when people first make an account for that very reason (though it has been quite a while since I made mine so I can't say for certain), and if they aren't then that should be the route they should be taking. Everyone who wants the e-mails should already be subscribed to them. Forcing those who don't want them to re-unsubscribe every time we grab a game from these giveaways is not good customer relations. They realized this in the past, but for some reason decided to change things. I would really like to know the reason. Because everything SmollestLight said only explains the reason for the marketing e-mails, not the reason for the recent inclusion of them with game giveaways (or the recent addition of reminders about the marketing e-mails at the end of every single news post on this site, but that is another matter and far easier to ignore). It really just feels like some upper management trying to boost some number somewhere to "prove" they are doing a good job.

MasterofFiction: SmollestLight did not in any way explain why the change was made,
To me the explanation was quite clear.

GOG is trying to expand the amount of people that it has subscribed to its newsletter, so that it can sell more games to them via future newletter emails.

Tying free games to newsletter subscriptions helps them to accomplish that goal, by enticing new customers to sign-up to the newsletter.

MasterofFiction: Forcing those who don't want them to re-unsubscribe every time we grab a game from these giveaways is not good customer relations.
Sure, but whilst that is true, that situation is very atypical. 95%+ of the people who subscribe to the newsletter are probably never going to unsubscribe.

It's the same principle behind how many company's offer "money back guarantees" as part of their sales pitches for their products: because they know beforehand that very few customers will ever actually go through the trouble of using their money back guarantee, even if they don't like the product.

So the point is: even though doing this will tick off some GOG customers like in the situation you described, that negative downside is greatly out-weighed by the positive upside of how many new newsletter customers that GOG signs-up as a result of tying free games to newsletter subscriptions.

You seem to have missed the part where I said that everyone who wants to be subscribed should already be from the moment they created an account. All they really seem to be doing is trying to get people who don't want to be subscribed to stay subscribed simply because it is less hassle than unsubscribing every time they have a giveaway. As I said, if I recall correctly marketing e-mails are set to allowed when you first create an account here, so the only people not already subscribed are those who don't want to be. If that isn't the case, then that is what they should be doing instead of trying to re-enable the subscription with every giveaway. All that serves to do is annoy those who don't want to be subscribed. I don't see how it could possibly increase their subscription numbers, since as I said everyone who wants to be subscribed already should be.

So obviously the "explanation" isn't at all clear or we wouldn't be having this discussion. Which is why I want a real answer as to why they recently changed their giveaways to require enabling marketing e-mails. They didn't used to, and I don't see how this change could "help grow the platform".
Thank You!!!
