Berzerk2k2: I don't see any problem with getting a newsletter from the same game store where I have 99% of my games. Without that newsletter I wouldn't have gotten such a nice all time low discount for Hellblade for example (-75% now, -85% through the newsletter discount code).
Agreed - no problem - but do you need to push people to subscribe? Wouldn't it be enought to let this newsletter speak for itself and attract customers?

avatar
Berzerk2k2: Also as many people already said you can turn this stuff off whenever you want in the subscriptions options. Don't punish yourself by missing out on a presumably great free game (4/5 rating) because manually removing four small check marks is too much effort.
I guess the problem for those who don't like it is that data might be given away and since this theoretically IS possible I really like to understand why GOG is even doing such things. Aren't they convinced enough with their marketing offers? If yes, people should simple subscribe because they WANT to subscribe. Those who don't want to subscripe should not get punished in any way so that they are happy as well and will buy games in future as well. I really can't see GOG winning anything from this move - except bad publicity.

This is the most ambitious giveaway ever given on GOG, and beats most stuff given for free on EPIC. The sad part for me is that I couldn't even finish the demo because of how hard it is, but I'll make a new attempt.

tfishell: There could be a percentage of people who will click on the emails and/or be reminded about games they want from the emails, or similar.
Well, if this really is the reason .... I guess only those who WILLINGLY subscribed would act like this - don't you think? Being pushed to do something usually makes people unnecessarily angry. At least this is my experience and my opinion.

TomNuke: It's a good thing for everyone, because the more people that hear about what's released or happening on GOG should translate to more sales, and GOG growing is a good thing for all of us. That should mean more games, more acquisitions from major studios, etc.

People who can't understand that, or get their panties in a bunch over some benign marketing e-mails just aren't very smart.
avatar
MarkoH01: So maybe I am not very smart but how does this help GOG? Some people get angry and those who are not angry would have subscribed anyways. Those however who dislike it might even buy less in future because of such experiences.

And yes, I really am curious - this is not a rant (like I said earlier, I am subscribed anyway).
There's a third group which is probably the overwhelming majority: People who don't care and subscribe now to get the free game. In the future they will get the newsletter which makes it more likely that they will buy new releases or games on promo. And that's the gain for GOG.

The question is: which data? When you have the newsletter deactivated, redeem the giveaway by clicking on the button at the main store page and immediately deactivate the newsletter stuff again in the subscription options I don't know which data could be of any use here.
Genious!
Another game in my library I can't play!
I love you, I love this, I love you all!
...
Where is my medication.

Looking at the people who are in the "angry" category, those are usually people who are compulsive complainers regarding a lot of things. And if that issue wouldn't exist, they would be complaining about something else, just to get their daily dosage in. Obviously, this section is purely personal opinion but if you watch humanity through the medium of online forums for a few decades, repeating patterns begin to emerge.

Personally, I don't think much of those emails. The personal discounts never seem to be weighed in my benefit when comparing price against likelihood of liking. But then I had this account for a while and most games I'm interested in already passed by in a few sales.
My pet believe is that subscription numbers and GA values are something of an epeen measurement for bosses. Trying to sell stuff to people is a surprisingly complex topic and having something concrete and simple like those numbers probably helps on cold nights...

Okay, thinking about it. That actually makes sense. Thank you.

Basically:
You think you are "definitely" going to be faster than any data collection sctipts that GOG may employ.
Remember: these are AUTOMATED, it's not like a living person has to click something "before you unsubscribe few seconds after subscribing".
For all I know the data could already be "waiting at the gate" and granting subscription simply opens way for it to go through immediatelly.
A lot of companies employ "collect first, ask later, if refuse then discard, otherwise let through instantly" tactic.
And no, "it doesn't bother me personally" is not a valid excuse for a valid problem.

And shaming / bashing / downvoting people for their privacy choices is just plain immature (this remark is directed at EVERYONE, not just you specificly).

I think if enough people got angry (or angry enough) GOG would stop doing it.

shrug I don't really have anything else useful to add

Once again, thank you for posting here. Seeing a mod giving feedback to sth. the community discusses or is divided about has become rare here at GOG and I cannot express enough how much it is appreciated.

Oh, wow. As a KS backer of the game, all I can say is: don't miss it if you're looking for a sci-fi horror souls-like. I still wear my backer t-shirt every now and then :P.

You kids, coming here thinking you have a free will and the like, not wanting to be mindless consumer bees. What is the GOGBear overlord to do with you? :P
