phaolo: Sometimes it's a good thing to do. I skipped BG1 because I read that BG2 was vastly superior.
I loved the sequel, but I still regret my silly decision -_-'

Dartpaw86: My brother says that about Half-Life "Don't bother with Half-Life 1, it doesn't get good until 2" except... I want to know the freaking story >_<
Other way around, the first half life is way better. xD
There's not much of a story in the first, though I won't spoil it in case you're planning on playing it.

The second is way too long, padded by vehicle sections that go on for ages.

I'd actually say that on my first playtrough, I enjoyed HL2 more than HL1. But on all consequent playtroughs, the sections which were designed to make the game interesting suddenly feel incredibly dull - oh this is the buggy section, the pretend-to-be-horror section, the antlion section. Whereas whenever I start HL1, the moment I get the first gun, I know that "Oh cool, this is the section where I'll get to use these satisfying weapons, navigate these exceptionally well designed levels and play against good AI!" for the rest of the game. Anyway, that's why I sort of appreciated HL2: Episode 1 even more than the original - sure, it was 4 hours long game, but those were 4 hours of varied shooting.

Yeah, the first one stays fun.

On that note recently played Black Mesa (unofficial remake of HL1)
Didn't really like it. I just can't place why. :l

For whatever reason, shooting stuff in HL2 engine (I'm purposefully not saying Source engine 'cause I never had that issue with Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, EYE: Divine Cybermancy or Left 4 Dead even tho the engine is mostly identical) felt like shooting plush toys. Everything is nice and soft and falls over and ragdolls when it dies, eh. HL1 didn't have that - the shooting had more 'oomph' - I guess a lot of that was sound design and older models with less polygons looking "tougher" or something along those lines. Oh god I just wrote the most non-descriptive post ever.

Now I'll have to replay HL1 and 2 purely to put my finger on that difference.

Finally, someone that doesn't 100% adore the shooting in HL2. :O
I'm not alone anymore.

Also, it doesn't go anywhere due to the open endings and the MIA chapter 3.
Btw, HL1 has a story, just not hours of annoying dialogue :P
