Yes, it's all part of a devious longterm plot by GOG. Make game release DRM as unpalatable as possible, so in 5 years time we'll be paying what we did for the original game.
Ka-ching!

Glexn: Who's still going to be playing BS2 15 upgrades down the track?
avatar
ceemdee: Perhaps people who like to play old games? I wonder where one could find such a group...

If you're like me, then you get a new PC every two years. That's 30 years worth of upgrades before you have call in. I'll be fifty-two by then. I doubt arthritis would allow me to play games.
I never ended up getting the first Bioshock, initially due to a combination of the DRM and the fact that the demo wouldn't work on my system despite it being more than enough to handle the game (not exactly something that inspires confidence in the product), and later because I basically just lost interest in the game as other things were released that I was more interested in. Bioshock 2 was already relegated to "maybe get it a year down the line if it's cheap and there are no hassles attached", and naturally news of the DRM on the game hasn't improved the chances that I'll get it.
However, I would like to take the opportunity to say that if anyone posts in this thread that they don't care about the DRM, then later starts a thread complaining that they got burned by that DRM, I reserve the right to be a condescending bastard when dishing out a massive serving of "I told you so." ;)

Crassmaster: Spore also just finished in the top ten retail sales for the year for the second year in a row. Therefore, there isn't a lot of incentive for the DRM to be changed due to lost sales.

Spore WAS the most anticipated game for a long time, so I'm not that surprised. I bought the galactic edition myself when it was released (and got burned by the DRM). That still doesn't change the fact that it's a shitty game, but you'd have to play it to find that out. So I guess the really interesting question is, how well have the expansion packs sold? Has the franchise turned out to be the cash cow that EA had hoped for? Or does everyone, like me, buy the game, try it and go "bugger that, what a waste of time"?
I didn't get why some of my friends were looking forward to Spore. There the types that hate almost every game nearing release (which makes me question if they even like video games), but Spore caught there eye?
GFWL, well, ill pass then.

nice poster, I liked the part "or don't play at all", cause that is what GFWL usually means for me.

Wishbone: I'd have to imagine it's done okay in terms of longetivity to be a best seller for 2 years in a row. And I think the Galactic expansion from last year did fairly well.

If they're stupid enough (hey no offense :P) to bash every game nearing release, they're stupid enough to buy into marketing at some point.

No, PLEASE mean offense! It annoys me too. "Every game ever is stupid vs (some crap thats nearly unplayable now). Makes me crazy! But then Spore or Kane & Lynch or Overlord sparks there interest? You are not a gamer sir! lol

Haha okay, offense then! Yes it drives me mad as well. I know a dude like it..he either bashes every game til release then loves it, or praises it like crazy until release then hates it. I don't envy him. :P
There are a few exceptions to the rule and they are great games though. But the only recent game seems to be Mass Effect. Everything else is apparently garbage.

Something I don't understand is :

Lucibel: You can activate the game 15 times – necessary for multiplayer – before you have to call Microsoft.

Does is means that the activation is only required for multiplayer and that for single player it will be possible to play with a GFWL offline account like I did for all my other GFWL games ?
If it's only for multiplayer I might get the game but if it's also for single player then I pass.
