bansama: If you're only interested in the way it looks, I'd probably agree. But that's still no excuse to pass off a modded version as vanilla in such a comparison.
What's so special in BFG edition that any mod to Doom 3 doesn't already have?

16:9 HUD? Wow... yeah...

That'll depend on what you want out of the game. Want proper support for higher resolution monitors without the need to dig into ini files? Want Steam achievements? Want that flashlight on your weapons without having to track down a place still hosting a mod for it? Want that flashlight on weapons that the mods don't put it on, and don't have modding knowledge? Want easy access to Doom 1 and Doom 2 ready to run on a modern system without the need to mess around with third party solutions? Want the flashlight item completely removed from the game forcing your melee attacks to be via fists only? Want some extra levels, even if they are recycled content? etc.

You might not want any of those. But some people out there will want most or all of them. Personally, I bought BFG because Doom 3 was one of the few FPS games I really enjoyed, and still enjoy today. I also bought it to show Bethesda Japan that they made the right choice in not only releasing it in Japan on Steam, but for releasing it earlier than the scheduled console release and at a fair price ($19.99 for previous Doom 3 owners).

I'll probably buy the PS3 version eventually too, when I find a cheap copy.
Good post bansama.

This release definitely has some appeal, especially for console gamers. If they patch it right I will probably buy it for $10-20 someday for the new levels if nothing else.

Still, removing the original from sale is total BS. Though I guess with the source code coming it won't matter for long, mod-wise.

Blood is reduced, bodies disappear quicker, etc.

In other words,

Well, they said they will restore original Doom games on steam stroe, so... another reasons to avoid BFG edition are as good as any :P

Did they actually say that?

The things Fuzzyfireball linked only say that they're "looking into options." As far as marketing-speak goes, that's not very promising. I more expect them to release a Doom 3 Super Special Limited Collector's BFG Edition (for 3x the price) that contains the pulled items than I expect them to restore everything the way it was.
You have to love "looking into options" as if there is some complication or issue involved outside them just wanting you to buy the new version.

Don't forget the balance changes. All enemies are slower and your guns do less damage to them. It's ... Dumb at places.

DOOM 3 on Ultra

BFG on Ultra

bansama: Ah those screenshots. Funny thing is, when I compare similar textures with both, BFG has the slightly better ones. Something tells me whoever took those screenshots "forgot" to mention they're using some mod/graphic pack or other graphic enhancment on the original game and not using same on BFG.
Found them here, Revenant100's post. I believe he's the maker of that Lost Mission comparison video as well.

No idea if it's true or not because I don't have BFG and don't really want it.

Why would non-console players (PC players) want this game? It's a pathetic cash in and you can get a better game with FREE mods applied to Doom 3 for PC.

Once I put Steam back in online mode (probably within the next 20 hours or so -- once Borderlands 2 finally unlocks) I'll fire up both standard Doom 3 and BFG, and take screenshots at identical locations for both with mods in standard Doom 3 disabled.

Might be a tad bit more playable with a controller though for those who can't aim for shite with a controller (like me). Not that I'd play an FPS on a PC with a controller. Or on the PS3 for that matter now I have a TAC3. >___>
