I'm looking for some more epic Blu-rays to add to my collection, preferably Asian (Japanese, Chinese, Korean) and wondered if anyone had any recommendations? Western Blu-rays are fine too.

I've got: Braveheart, Red Cliff, The Warlords, Assembly, Taegukgi, The Last Samurai, Troy, Saving Private Ryan and The Good, The Bad & The Weird. I'm holding out for the extended editions of Lord of the Rings but anything else I'm game for really; the films don't necessarily have to be filled with huge battles, just something that takes you on a great journey & has a good runtime.

Umm, no Speed Racer? That movie looks amazing in Hi-Def. And before you say anything, I actually liked it.

LOL I actually have that, just didn't think of classing it as epic. It is one hell of a stunner though and..... *looks around* I like it too.

Is Battle of the Warriors on Blu-ray? It's Chinese, based on a manga, and it quite epic. Even if it's not on Blu-ray, you should pick it up. I will be watching this thread, because I've been looking for some epic Asian action films.

It looks like it is, under a publisher called Dragon Dynasty. I highly recommend The Warlords & Red Cliff (especially Red Cliff if you can get over it's 4 hour runtime... but it comes in 2 halves.)

Yeah, I want to read Romance of the Three Kingdoms first though. Any good Korean epic movies? Or on of those long series would work too, if I can get my hands on them.

Well, I've watched a fair few blu-ray films, but only own a few (rental is better value at the moment, except for anything a bit special).

Watchmen is the sort of film that makes it worthwhile, or anything that relys heavily on visuals (which is not always a bad thing! Film is a visual medium after all...)

As for Asian cinema, I've not seen any on Blu-ray, but I'd always recommend Old Boy. Most of the Asian films I've seen have been horror or similar though (stuff like Audition, Dumplings, Into the Mirror, Phone, etc.)

Kind of off-topic... but since you mentioned Korean movies... There is this movie whose events take place during the Korean War (the one that happened after WW2), and its about two brothers that end up fighting themselves, because they somehow ended up on opposing sides.

Anyone knows the name of the movie? It was in Korean or some other Asian language.

The events happen before Romance of the Three Kingdoms I believe. Korean epics hmm.... Well Assembly and Taegukgi (aka Brotherhood) are both based on the 1950s Korean war , Assembly is half action, half reflection but Brotherhood is a standout Saving Private Ryan kinda affair throughout; infact I prefer it to Saving Private Ryan.

I don't know of any more historical epics though but there's a period murder mystery called Blood Rain which is brilliant, though I don't think it's on bluray but the dvd is fairly good quality. Also there's The Good, The Bad & The Weird which is a great action movie, well worth checking out the trailer for; it's basically a spaghetti western set in Korea with lots of action.

I think it's called Taegukgi, if I recalled correctly. That was pretty epic movie, I must confessed.

Seven Samurai? I didn't really like it, I seem to be the only one though.

2001: A Space Odyssey, Doctor Zhivago, and Gone with the Wind are my favourite epics.
