GIVEAWAY CLOSED - CONGRATS TO POTZATO

Quick summary - This is a giveaway for a GOG copy of Deponia... rules below...

Okay, so I was introduced to Fallout 3 about a year ago and while I found it interesting, I felt like I should go back and check out the original Fallout games. I never did. Well, not yet. Yes, I know I'm probably the only GOGlodyte who hasn't played the Fallout games, but I recently picked up Fallout 1 and plan to start a game sometime soon. I will complete my Fallout catalog if I enjoy it, which I expect I will.

THIS is where you come in... I know with old cRPGs like Baldurs Gate and Planescape: Torment, there were always plenty of things I wished I'd known going in...

TL:DR - To enter for a chance to win a GOG copy of Deponia, one must have at least 20 rep or have a registration date prior to July 2013 and positive rep... also:

For those who have played Fallout 1, tell me a thing or two that stuck out for you that you were really glad you knew about the game or that you learned along the way and found worthy of noting/remembering. If you haven't played it, just say as much, but you are still welcome to enter the draw.

Sometime in the next couple days I'll pick someone using random dot org or some other method to pick one winner.

I learned the it's much easier to tell between bodies if there is absolutely no gore. So I play with gore turned off and no bloody mess.

I guess I'm in :p
I actually purchased myself a retail disc copy of Fallout 1+2+Tactics and as you, still have yet to play it. I also bought Fallout 3 and New Vegas, so I have to play the entire series.. Not in for the GA as I have Deponia on STEAM, but thanks and +1 for the GA.

What I REALLY Wish I had known was that there is a time limit, so don't mess around too much till you have done what they tell you to do.
Buy a rope, for the love of god BUY A ROPE IN THE FIRST TOWN YOU COME ACROSS!!!!! And download the manual, it takes a while to understand the interface if you try to do it on your own, working between turn based combat, mobility, action points, item usage, leaving battle, switching weapons, dropping and using items, opening menus, so forth. There's things in your interface you won't know are buttons without a curious click and others that you'll not be sure what they did, so the manual will help.

Thanks for the giveaway.

Edit: Clarification, the first major area you'll visit past the vault's training area is a little town that will be marked on your map. My first through 5th time playing (I crashed a few times, once wound up in a fight with rad scorpions that I couldn't win because I was level 1, and restarted several more just learning controls and the interface), I didn't know there was a rope. I didn't know there was a rope mechanic. I didn't know that I would need a rope in the next site that I was asked to visit. I wandered around for about 10 minutes without any idea how to progress. I went outside. I got killed by more radscorpions heading back to town. I only learned about the rope after coming to GOG and asking about it (Thanks FenixP!!), but I haven't had time to put the game on again. So, get the rope. Or your game is going to be fairly short in terms of progression.

jamotide: What I REALLY Wish I had known was that there is a time limit, so don't mess around too much till you have done what they tell you to do.
Depends on the version. The original version has the limit on days at max 500, depending on actions you take in the game. Later versions changed the limit to something like 10000 days or more, which pretty much eliminated the time limit.
Read the manual, but do not read ANY guides or walkthroughs.

While some character builds may have an easier time than others, it is virtually impossible to create a character that is unable to complete the game. So don't over think your character development.

There are definite advantages to getting your weapon skills above 100%, for all the other skills the benefits of boosting them that high are extremely situational.

Take some time to read over the Perks in the game. You are limited to just 7, so find 2-3 that you think you might really want and make sure your character stats meet the minimum requirements.

Unless you are really wanting a specific perk you can make the game a bit easier by taking points out of Charisma and pumping up Agility and Intelligence.
I don't want to give spoilers but in Fallout 1 you have a time-constraint for the main quest, so beware. Also I found that NPCs are mostly useless :D. So charisma is not really necessary. I usually wouldn't take the Skilled trait because you loose lots of perks that way, however the Gifted trait is usually well worth it.
not sure about GOG version, but the retail version even patched to max crashed A LOT

there are certain areas where it would crash all the time no matter of what and only solution was to get out quickly, sometimes certain floating texts made the game crash too, the tricky part was it didn't crash instantly but after a while, and If you've saved a game meanwhile, the file got corrupted, if you save too often, it makes the game crash too

Fallout 2 is my all time favourite and I really wish the first Fallout wouldn't be so broken

in fact I've damaged my keyboard by hitting it after like 100 crash of the game
but still, the world and story is pretty good, I've especially enjoyed the storyline
I'd consider downloading the latest community patch. It fixes a lot of bugs and is recommended for a first playthrough :)
Not in but +1

Two most important things that come to mind :

1. Get ropes from the first town you get to and
2.Remember the game IS TIMED !
I'm in.

WARNING, there are some small spoilers.

I've been playing Fallout since the day it came out in the USA(1997) so trust my words. In the beginning of the game, make sure you get Ian to join your party. In the beginning of the game, he increases your chance of survival 10000 times. He is located in Shady Sands in the building near the entrance. He is wearing a black jacket and blue jeans. It also helps to get Dogmeat as soon as possible too. He is located in Junktown. Dogmeat is a dog. You find him guarding a house. Give him some food and he will be yours forever. He kicks ass in battle. Keep him alive though. NPCs in your party can die. So after you visit Shady Sands, you should look for Junktown. There is another good reason to visit Junktown after Shady Sands. Before going to the more dangerous places in this hostile world, you will need more than your shiny blue vault suit and a pistol. When you first arrive at Killian's store, talk to him. When the conversation is over, a guy will come in and try to kill Killian. Shoot that bastard. You wont be the only person shooting at him so it is an easy battle. After the assassin dies, loot his corpse. You will find a rifle. Then I recommend you do all the quests in Junktown before looking for the water chip. But don't screw around because there is a time limit until you give your people the water chip, they need. Three more things, never give away the location of your vault... Buy as much rope as possible before heading into the vault near Shady Sands. And stay away from the North West until you are high lvl with good armor and weapons. Most random encounters in the North West usually equals death for low lvl characters with shitty armor and weapons.

Here are the 4 noob safe places in the wasteland.

Shady Sands
Junktown
The Hub
The Brotherhood Of Steel Base

You better know how to take care of yourself, everywhere else..

PS
NPCs in your party can accidentally shoot you so keep that in mind when you give Ian, a weapon that can do burst. One burst from an SMG will usually kill you if you are low lvl with shitty armor.

I'm in, +1.

The most important thing to prepare yourself for enjoying Fallout is to work past the illusion there are some hidden tips necessary to enjoy it. Focus on the entertaining story and knowing that it's the beginning of a popular mythos. It's been a while since I played Fallout years ago but it's not really a game that requires a lot of advance knowledge in my opinion (some areas may be hard, but the game is not unfair). I don't recall struggling with much or feeling frustrated. In considering my reply, I tried to think of some hidden knowledge or thought about trying to Google something that would seem witty... but Fallout is really a straight forward game probably best enjoyed with as little advance information as possible.

Actually there is one more tip about Fallout games in general. Always check the corners. For some reason developers like to put nice items in the corners of the buildings, where you can see them only when standing there.
I found it quite easy to kill all the raiders in the beginning with an SMG, then you can loot all their corpses for a tonne of weapons, armour and equipment early on.

Most of the skills in this game are pretty useless. I pumped up my 3 tag skills and then just stopped bothering to assign skill points anywhere else. You can buy books to increase some of them that have marginal uses (like repair), and money is very easy to come by. I ended up with like 99 unspent skill points by the time I finished the game and had no problems whatsoever.

Although there is a time limit, there is nothing stopping you from just waltzing over to where the item you're looking for is hiding out and grabbing it in the first 10 minutes of the game. Then you don't have to worry about the time limit anymore...

You can use explosives to disable forcefields, which can come in handy at one point in the game.

There is a spot where you will have to worry about radiation - taking 2 RADX pills will prevent radiation from harming you.

Personally I far preferred Fallout 2, I hope you try it regardless of what you think of Fallout 1.
