Just a quick heads up for anyone planning on a trip to Thailand, we've just had another military coup as of two hours ago.

All TV and radio stations have been shut down, there's a 10pm curfew every night nationwide, and all government and anti-government representatives that were at a meeting have been arrested by the military.

Of course, the usual Thai 'spin doctors' will be coming out saying how it won't affect tourism and it won't be dangerous. DO NOT BELIEVE THIS FOR A MINUTE.

I was also here for our 2006 coup, and that was a completely different animal. This one, I'm guessing, is going to be bloody, violent and could end up in civil war if the military isn't able to maintain control.

Just letting anyone know who might be heading to Thailand, or know people who are to hold off doing so until we see what the next couple of weeks bring.

My guess? It's going to be very very very bad. I'm hoping I'm wrong.

I also hope you're wrong. I've already booked my month-long vacation to Thailand in November, and I'm not in the mood of loosing a lot of money.

You might be lucky if the Romanian government declares it officially unsafe to travel to Thailand. Travel companies are generally unwilling to take chances on dangerous vacations - it's an insurance nightmare.

Despite the bad news, good to see you here again. Hope you're well.

It's not looking good, although November is a ways off so it could improve.

The pro-government red shirt group announced months ago, and then again last week, that if the elected government was kicked out in a military coup they WOULD fight and civil war would begin. Elected government has just been kicked out, so here we go.....I also know someone who spoke to Jonathan Head the BBC reporter stationed here in Bangkok and, after interviewing hundreds of pro-government supporters, he's been convinced for a long time that civil war is imminent here. I tend to agree with him. Let's hope we're both wrong.

Meanwhile,we're already getting reports of the army firing live ammunition above the heads of pro-government supporters to disperse them. No word yet if anyone was injured or killed, however. Hopefully not.

As of now, internet still on, but nothing else on TV or radio except BBC is. Military has taken over control of all TV, and radio stations as well as all main newspapers.

It could be worse! What if you lost the money in a losing-money-mood and actually sees that as a positive changes or with an indifferent attitude. ;)

That's rough regarding the military coup. Has there been indications that this will happen due to instability or was it not even expected?

The thing is, I've booked my own flights, I haven't booked at any agency. So I'm not really sure if Qatar Airways or Air Asia would reimburse me. Anyway war sucks, so I hope that the situation will be resolved peacefully...

Thanks sinungie,

Just staying at home right now, as curfew hits in a couple of hours, and it seems smart to watch what happens in the next few hours before venturing out.

The last coup was a breeze, and actually quite fun. Unfortunately, this one is going to be a bitch I think (

And yes, Thailand's economy is likely going to collapse. Sad for all those millions of poor Thais who depend on the tourist industry and export industry just to scrape a living.
"Revolutions" never amount to anything. Just look at Egypt, they are 5 times worse off than before....
Aie.. I was there in Spring 2010, I hope you are wrong and it will calm down for your country, find a "peaceful" agreement..
Thank you for the warning, Bloodygoodgames. I hope that you are able to stay safe.

We've all known it was coming for months. A group of elite (rich) politicians got together and persuaded the idiot poorly-educated Thai middle class to demonstrate as the elected government (elected by over 60 percent of the country, but mainly by poor Thais) was 'corrupt'.

Mass demonstrations ensued by this easily-led idiots, and led by a corrupt scumbag (Suthep), and the elected prime minister was finally kicked out a couple of weeks ago. The government has been limping along since, until martial law was declared 3 days ago. Then, coup, two hours ago.

I'm in the process of getting the hell out of Thailand anyway. The country is going nowhere fast, so I'm moving back to Europe. Looks like my move might be quite a bit faster than planned :)
Fuck, military coups. Or rather, fuck military, period.

I had a wonderful time the little time I spent there, but that's beside the point. I wish you the best, and that somebody checks what happened back home on the 1936 and takes a lesson from that. Sad thing is, as much as I would like the pro-government party to get aid from outside, that might escalate the issue and make it even worse for locals, but what do I know.

It's just sad that these things keep happening.

Yep.

The 2006 coup absolutely KILLED Thailand's economy and it never fully recovered. If there's a blood bath with this one, it's going to completely decimate what's left.

And yes, poor Thailand will definitely be worse off.

We're not allowed to talk about the king here :)

You say the wrong thing, and it's an immediate jail sentence of up to 20 years.

No, Thailand is not a developed country. Nowhere near.

Oh and btw, it's not technically 'my' country. I'm British. Thank God!
