Not knowing how your tastes run, the best I can offer is my favorites list. I read quite a few cozy mysteries, scifi/fantasy, and non-fics, especially histories and books explaining how people think.
My favorite (funny) fantasy authors include Terry Pratchett, Sprague De Camp, John Morressy (mostly out of print these days. sadness), Alan Dean Foster's Spellsinger series, Robert Asprin's Myth series, Christopher Stasheff, Jasper Fforde, Douglas Adams, Lloyd Alexander (YA, but good), Craig Shaw Gardner, and Tom Holt.
I also like the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. I've enjoyed Rick Riordan's YA adventures thus far. I am sure you've heard of JK Rowling's Harry Potter and JRR Tolkein's Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit? Yes, their books really are that good.
Here's my bookshelf. Hope it inspires you to find a few favorites of your own <(")
& Yep, TV or FB can just eat the free hours up like candy too. So can hanging out in fun forums like this one lol
