Ya honestly the best thing to do right now is not worry about it. Just join in on discussions be constructive in your comments and have fun rep should go up on it's own. As long as you treat people here like you would treat friends in real life everything should be fine.

vexxum: So guys, as you know I am new, and not really used to this whole "rep" thing. Only thing I know is that I want 20 rep to join the GOG gifting club. :P

Anyways, yesterday I had 2 rep, and now I have like -1...how did that happen? Can someone explain this system to me? :) Thanks guys.

dirtyharry50: My advice to you vexxum would be to forget all about the GOG gifting clubs for a good long time, like maybe a year or something. Seriously. I've been here for a couple years now and haven't even visited those threads I don't think. I have no business there until and unless I am able to spread the love (give gifts) too.

I imagine you are young and on a tight budget. We've all been there. Patience is a virtue my son. :D You just gotta take it easy and earn stuff as you go is all. I would encourage you to not even look at GOG gifting threads again, until you been here a good amount of time and gotten to know people AND you are prepared to give them gifts too. It is particularly nice if you are prepared to offer a gift first even.

As someone else suggested though, there are kind people here who often do various giveaways and subject to whatever rules they might set up it should be okay to enter those contests and maybe you'll luck out. I just did the other day myself which I was very grateful for.

When you are new especially here is a simple and very good rule of the road: don't ask for anything, offer what you can, join contests if you are allowed to and most of all just be an active member of the community talking about all things gaming and other stuff here. The rest falls into place over time. Your rep will climb by itself if you simply play nice in general.

You are probably excited to be here. GOG is a very cool place. Just slow down a little and enjoy being part of the best gaming community on the interwebs. :D
Very much this.

Let me also add a word of encouragement. i have only been active in the GOG forum since around September. I have been fortunate enough to be in a postion to gift some games and host some giveaways. But even that stuff has been only in the last month or so. My point is, if you just try to work as an active member in the forum, treating others with respect and just have fun talking with other members about video games or movies or any other random topic that will come up, your rep will start to increase in no time. Just enjoy your time here.

I signed up during the Realms of Arkania 1+2 giveaway. My very first post was a thread I made on whether or not given my tastes, that I explained, I should buy Baldur's Gate that was on sale.

And you know what? Someone in that thread just gave it to me. Both Baldur's Gate 1 AND 2.

The thing is I didn't ask for them. I was nervous about making a purchase and was just looking for advice. So I think how you approach the community makes a huge difference.

My first experience showed me how amazing this community can be, I had no idea gifting was a thing. It's unfortunate yours had to be so sour but take it as a lesson and move on. Stop asking for games. Be part of the community because you want to, not for ulterior motives.

I don't know if you have any games here, but if you feel like you don't have anything to add to the conversation buy one or two, with this big sale it shouldn't be hard to play a couple of the big classics so you can pretend to know what you're talking about. God knows I've been faking my way through the forums for three months now. If you absolutely can't spare a dime, between Duke Nukem 3D, Beneath a Steel Sky and the rest of the free games you have plenty to play already.

vexxum: Thank you, Sianna. I bet you this post will be down rated too. :( At least someone shows some kindness on here. Jeez...guys, I am literally a 14-year old who is looking to have some fun! And I love gaming! Please stop downrating me for being "an annoying un-mature nooob" or whatever you think.
If you just make normal posts your rep should climb by about 1 per day. Down and up reps can only move you a couple of points.

Don't worry about giveaways, I know they seem neat and I'm sure your 14 year old pocketbook could use the love, but just save 10 bucks and grab a couple of sale games, there's a couple in the catalog that could keep you busy for months by themselves.

Once people get to know you a bit they won't care about your rep when doing giveaways.
How about a "pre-forum" where new people are stuck for a month? They can see our posts but can't write their own; they can only communicate with each other and read ours to get a better idea of what's going on.

But I jest.

Yeah, just relax, look around, get a feel for what's what. A gift now and then is nice, but this forum is mainly about the people. And the games. Or vice-versa.

Good idea! We could call it GOGtergarten.

But yeah. It usually takes a while to get a feel for what's appropriate for a given community. Live and learn. :)

Siannah: All fair and good. However I was talking about this thread right here being marked as low rated (which changed since I posted). Can't say I see anything in the OP to justify that.
Didn't you know? Talking about the rep system in any way/shape/form ist verboten, as it is more evil than the evilest of evils. ;)

The logic go something like this.

Now there is a rating system. It's a popular thing on the internet. You got it for free.
So shut the hell up about criticising it! Do not ever say it's flawed! It_is_a_good_thing! Shut up! ARGH ARGH ARGH!

Very recently we had problems with someone making multiple new accounts and scamming people out of games on trades. So that's part of the issue here.

Also, that whole boy vs girl thread was a bad idea, and you were rightly down-repped for that.

As you make non-flamebait posts and stick around people will see that you're not a scammer or anything and be more welcoming.

Oh, I see. :( People think I scam. Okay. Sorry everyone....I meant no offenses to anyone and am definitely NOT scamming.

Relax. The GOG community is one of the best, if not the best I've found on the net but with that also comes some negative things. For example GOGites are prideful of our community and if someone new comes in and doesn't know our "culture" or doesn't fit right in GOGites can be a bit bitchy.
Yes the usual answer is that new members should Lurk until they feel they know something about how the community works but hey, nothing wrong with jumping right in if you're not outright trolling I say. Though like in most online communities you have to be ready for a somewhat bumpy ride at the beginning then. :)

Yes, I am used to a more smooth entrance on other forums. And I see how you "GOGites" (LOL) can get a bit annoyed at guys that jump right in.

Maybe things will smooth out in the next couple of weeks. :)

Sorry, but that's a load of bull.......the thread looked a bit pointless, but it wasn't offensive/trollish/flaming as far as I could tell.

Agreed. Give the kid a break. He was just trying to have some fun. Besides, there was another thread that was very similar.

Imo(Just stating what's on my mind, here), the ones that have been here longer tend to give more of a "pass" for various Faux Pas to those they know/those who have also been around a long time vs. those who haven't been here long.

I dunno if this is subconsciously done or not.....it is noticeable, though, if you pay attention long enough.
