Stevedog13: Is it just me, or did the linked article seem more like an advertisment for CBS All Access than a Star Trek announcment?
It's a marketing release posted on the official Star Trek website, so yeah... to be expected.

Breja: Todays TV shows, much like todays movies, have bloated budgets but quality and creativity rarely follows.
No way man, todays shows are much much better than the crap 20 years ago. I watch all Treks pretty often, but more than half the episodes are pointless unwatchable crap, whereas in todays shows nearly every episode for example of The Wire or Breaking Bad is very good.

yyahoo: Kurtzman? Ugh, no thanks. One of the worst writers in the business IMHO...

dewtech: Read that as well and thought the same.
That alternate universe is some bulls**t, yup I'm going to say it, even ST: Enterprise was better than the movies *gasps*
I whole heartedly agree!

I had fairly low expectations of the first JJ Abrahms Star Trek, mostly that no matter what happened it couldn't be any worse that Enterprise. Unless of course they completley change every characters backstory and personality for some lame reason like an "alternate timeline" or something. I actually felt dirty walking out of the theatre.

To each his own I guess. For me shows like Robin of Sherwood, Babylon 5, The Prisoner, Miami Vice, Star Trek, TNG and DS9 are far, far superior to any new shows. And that's just to name a few.

Elmofongo: I just don't want cheap special effects and sets man.

Even if the story and themes are good. It would be distracting if it looks like it came from the 1970s :P
avatar
Breja: I'm fine with it looking every bit as cheap as The Original Series if everything else would be even half as good that show. Sure, good visuals are nice, but that's never been Trek's focus. Trek isn't Game of Thrones, and thank heavens for that. Todays TV shows, much like todays movies, have bloated budgets but quality and creativity rarely follows. For all that money and "production values" we keep relaying on iconic designs and imagery made cheaply decades ago.
When I said I this new show to be on the level of Game of Thrones production values, I'm not asking for constant sex and fuckwords in this new Star Trek show mind you.

There is already a Game of Thrones of Sci Fi already and its called Babylon 5.

budejovice: Aside from the pilot episode which will be shown on TV, all subsequent episodes will stream only at CBS's standalone, monthly-paid streaming service.

I love Star Trek, but if I ever see this it will be via torrent.
:/

Well, that means I'll likely never see it either then. Shame, I've been looking for a new Sci Fi series (though 2017 is a bit longer to wait then I'd like)

Yes, because I'm sure it will never be released on DVD.
There hasn't been a good Star Trek tv show since Deep Space Nine. I'm not getting my hopes up.
I do not think it will be set in JJAs alternate ST timeline. Besides CBS only being allowed to do prime timeline they will not win much by using the JJ timeline. The majority of long time fans are more interested in the prime time line; the mass appeal audience the JJ movies have been tailored too do not care as long as there are enough explosions; the neutral fans are neutral and happy with both. I actually cannot remember hearing/meeting/reading from any hardcore fan of the new movies who dislikes everything from the prime timeline.

I don't have a DVD player or buy DVDs.
It couldn't be worse than Enterprise. I've been watching clips of The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. Do you know how hard it is to find more than a few seconds of The House of Quark on video sites? Gonna’ have to bite the bullet and get the series out of my cabinet, and find the right box. Such a hassle.

Ah, a LaserDisc man.
I always feel so alienated in threads like this after a while. Everyone has a Trek they hate and they can be all "it can't possibly be worse!" or "I lost all faith in Trek after that!". And here I am, liking pretty much all things Trek. Sure, there are single episodes here and there I hate, but a whole show or even a movie? I like them all, even when I'm aware of how flawed some were.

Yay. Time to listen to Crockett's Theme again.

And again.
