blakstar: I'll even go so far as to say that Star Trek V, often regarded as one of the worst movies, wasn't so bad overall! :-)
avatar
Breja: It had great character moments and some interesting ideas. It's very flawed sure, but I still enjoy watching it a lot. And I don't care if it's Shatner's ego writing the script, Kirk standing up to God and asking him what he needs with a starship is awesome.

Also- fuck me you people (not all but most) are wet blankets. I'd think that this would be a great news, but there is so much negative energy it's like you all shoud have goatees. We even have the now-obligatory-in-every-thread hurr-durr about them terrible women and black people.
Dude its going to be written by the guy behind Transformers. Its going the most expensive stinker since Into Darkness. Of course we are salty.
Be we'll get lens flares and maybe even more lens flares. ;D

PimPamPet: Sign of the times? And like others have mentioned, there's plenty of reasons to be skeptical. The last two shows (Voyager and Enterprise) frankly sucked bananas and the new movies, while passable popcorn flicks, don't really "feel" like the Trek of old (and yes, of course nostalgia plays a part in it as well). The audience has grown up, but the franchise was dumbed down. Expectations are accordingly low.
^This.

I wish it wasn't ^ This.

But it is.

I'll be off watching DS9 again.

Bah, humbug. Voyager wasn't bad, and neither was Enterprise. Like I said above, I like all things Trek, and I think all this hate towards the later shows and movies is largely nonsensical. Nothing Star Trek was ever so bad as to taint the franchise and justify all this negativity. I love Star Trek, I'll be the first to yell "betrayal" if it's justified. For now however there is no reason not to greet the news with optimism.

drealmer7: I think the new movies are not only blasphemous, but outright BAD all around.
avatar
ET3D: Still, tens of millions watched Into Darkness even though JJ's Star Trek was said to be that. So obviously a lot of people didn't share that opinion.
So if millions of people watch something, it's automatically good?

You're a Kardashian fan, then?
avatar
drealmer7: It's obvious you don't know DS9 very well is how all of that reads to me. The writing is fantastic, the characters are all fantastic (you're not really supposed to like Sisko for a bit, as they didn't want to make him "charmingly likable" like the previous captains, and, they are doing something complex with the writing, developing a character, letting you get to know him and like him because of who he really is, not because he is filling some written trope that is meant to be liked.) They do that with all of the characters, really, it's a character-driven, personality-interaction, social-commentary show with tons of great sci-fi ideas to enhance it. It's my favorite (and I think the best!) Star Trek series.
That is not what I said, the character is great, just the overacting is so embarrassing. I was making it pretty clear that I was talking about the acting. Sure it might be the best Trek, but it is amateurish compared to recent TV series, that is what we were talking about.
And yeah I know it well, in case you missed it, I just watched through it for like the sixth time, I really like Trek, but I can objectively see the bad even in stuff I love.

drealmer7: Breaking Bad has ATROCIOUS writing, by the way, they definitely broke bad with their writing. The Wire is superb though.
How is it ATROCIOUS ? Didn't it get like a ton of praise and awards for the writing?
Im hoping for more klingons!

They made a mass-murdering drug lord sympathetic. It can't have been that bad.

I actually like Voyager, but will never admit it to my brother. He has the Voyager box set, I have the Deep Space Nine box set. We are blood enemies.

lol demon! fuckin demon! Voyager wasn't all bad but it gets reactions like starwars fans react to the prequel trilogy. Its bad because everyone says so not because it is.

No, its bad because its bad.

Kate Mulgrew was a horrible choice for the Janeway character. Would MUCH rather have seen Denise Crosby. A female James T. Kirk, if you will.

Doesn't mean the episodes were bad. They had their fair share of great episodes.

My disllike of Kate Mulgrew as Janeway is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many other things I dislike about Voyager, but I don't want to author a "Hedwards" style wall of text.
avatar
darthspudius: so cause we have a couple of ropey shows we should never make any more? If that was the case with Star Wars there would be no movies after Return of the Jedi but they still keep making more despite how "Funny" that one was.
avatar
rampancy: Oh, I'm all for making more Star Trek. It's just that it'll take a lot to redeem it in the eyes of many. Star Wars is a good parallel here. There's a lot riding on JJ Abrams' movie after the extended period of profound disappointment we had with the Prequel Era (at least we got Genndy Tartakovsky's arguably excellent Clone Wars series out of that). If that movie hits Phantom Menace levels (which is still a possibility), it'll be a huge blow to Disney's future plans with the Star Wars IP.

After a string of arguably disappointing TV series and a sequel movie that didn't hit any of the highs of its spiritual predecessor, another mediocre TV show with middling reviews may prove that Star Trek's time as anything but a hyperkinetic action movie may well and truly have passed.

But hey, anything can happen. If the show is backed up by a solid and experienced group of producers, directors and writers, headed up by a good showrunner, I'd say the chances are looking good for this new series. Needless to say, if it involves Berman and Braga in any way, this show's fate is already sealed.
I'm still waiting for them to make episodes I-III, also I think it would be kind of cool if they'd make more Matrix movies to go along with The Matrix.

While we're at it, I think we could use some more Indiana Jones movies, 4 isn't enough.

I loved the Voyager pilot so much that I basically forgave any future sins...

And perhaps I should add that I mean first episode, not Tom Paris. :)
