Good thing is this new Star Trek TV series isn’t tied to the new Star Trek Movies.
Sheldon Should be so proud afterall TBBT and Star Trek will TV series both will air on CBS.
Great to hear, I just hope it will not set in the movies reboot universe or that at least they try to give it more depth than the movies.

hedwards: Do we need more?

Anyways, what makes you think it's not going to be more of that Enterprise, crap? I personally lost interest after Deep Space 9. I liked the series, but the episodes of Voyager I saw didn't seem particularly good.

I'd much rather see more movies if they must continue the series. But, at some point, it seems best to just let the series retire.

darthspudius: Well someone is a little pessimistic. Enterprise and Voyager had their moments. Also yes, we need more. Nuff said.
Not if it's more of the same that we got for most of Voyager, Enterprise and the last few TNG movies: I'm not about to start engaging in a flame war over what was good/bad about the last few years of Star Trek, but it's hard to ignore that Star Trek's fallen a long way from the peaks it reached with latter-day TNG and DS9.

Oh, and if anyone is confused as I was about why this was a CBS announcement and not Paramount, there'sa simple guide to the rights distribution for Star Trek here:

Since this is CBS, it's a good chance they'll set it in the "Prime" universe that follows the same continuity as pre-Abrams Reboot Trek.

There are some possibilities as to what direction they could take (like a post-Federation universe somewhat analogous to Andromeda, which was going to be the focus of a web series that got cancelled), but chances are it'll just be something trying to go for gritty and dark like BSG or B5 (see Stargate Universe for how that could end for a Trek show like that), or something trying to ape the action-oriented hyperkinetic tone of the movies.

Amen to that, brother.

yyahoo: Kurtzman? Ugh, no thanks. One of the worst writers in the business IMHO...
When I read he would be the executive producer it immediately dimmed my interest.

Even Star Trek the game from 2013, which he also co-wrote, had a better storyline than his movies.
At least I can recall the plot from the game, as opposed to his movies.

All I can recall from his first movie is shiny stuff and glares, and from the second movie Kirk waking up with Asian cat-girls and seeing Sherlock kill a man in a very gruesome way. That's my summary of those two movies.
I'll be cautiously optimistic about this new Trek. It's hard to completely screw up Trek; even Voyager and Enterprise had good episodes once in a while. Both shows might've been really good had they dumped a few unfortunate plots and focused on making the majority of the characters more interesting.

I really don't like the thought of the new series being available solely through a CBS subscription, though. Streaming t.v. services can work, but only under particular circumstances. Netflix and Hulu, for example, offer a huge number of shows, and HBO GO shows water cooler t.v. While there is a huge built-in fanbase for a new Trek franchise, the fact remains that Trek will be one (potentially) interesting show on a service that offers a lot of very similar content. CBS will never have the broad scope of a Hulu or a Netflix, even if t licenses a few older shows. And as far as the water cooler factor goes, CBS has a reputation of being boring t.v. for old people. That's not to say that there aren't any good shows on CBS, and that's not to say that Trek won't be interesting to large segments of the population. Still, CBS's reputation will have to get a whole lot cooler if it wants to entice people to pay for its streaming content. As much as I love Trek (and might be willing to pay for something like The Good Wife or Elementary), I need a streaming service to offer more than three good shows to be worth a monthly fee.

so cause we have a couple of ropey shows we should never make any more? If that was the case with Star Wars there would be no movies after Return of the Jedi but they still keep making more despite how "Funny" that one was.
I'd rather have J. Michael Straczynski make a new big series in the Babylon 5 universe with a clear concept like the original series and am currently watching the whole series again - now at Season 5.

Star Trek and Star Wars just look really pale compared to the character development, concept, moral, acting and allusions to recurring problems of human history in B5.
I'd rather have mysticism based on incredibily advanced technology of very old races (B5) than "magic" (Star Wars) and humans which are not replaced by some other much better species that somehow looks and calls itself the same although doesn't have much in common with real humans (Star Trek).
I like Star Wars for the fairy-tale it is and Star Trek for the stage play it is to me though.
They lack a proper moral to their stories and B5 is doing a real good job at this.

But Star Trek is a good show, Babylon 5 doesn't get that pleasure. :P

Oh, I'm all for making more Star Trek. It's just that it'll take a lot to redeem it in the eyes of many. Star Wars is a good parallel here. There's a lot riding on JJ Abrams' movie after the extended period of profound disappointment we had with the Prequel Era (at least we got Genndy Tartakovsky's arguably excellent Clone Wars series out of that). If that movie hits Phantom Menace levels (which is still a possibility), it'll be a huge blow to Disney's future plans with the Star Wars IP.

After a string of arguably disappointing TV series and a sequel movie that didn't hit any of the highs of its spiritual predecessor, another mediocre TV show with middling reviews may prove that Star Trek's time as anything but a hyperkinetic action movie may well and truly have passed.

But hey, anything can happen. If the show is backed up by a solid and experienced group of producers, directors and writers, headed up by a good showrunner, I'd say the chances are looking good for this new series. Needless to say, if it involves Berman and Braga in any way, this show's fate is already sealed.

A very new coat of paint for a very old Constitution Class space ship. Scrap the refit.
I have but one question: will Shatner be in it? :-)

PimPamPet: I have but one question: will Shatner be in it? :-)
Not as captain. They're going super politically correct for this one. They've already done the black captain and female captain. I hear this time they're going with a blind dwarf from El Salvador, who will also be trans-species and will spend at least one episode a season reminding the audience why it's ok to want flippers or tentacles instead of hands.

Emob78: <snip>
Sounds like truly riveting (and Star Trekkie) storytelling to me. I still think they should put Shatner in there somewhere, to make up for failing to deliver on their promise to give him an episode on Enterprise (or should we try to forget that show ever happened).

I probably won't be watching this anyway, especially if it's exclusive to some subscription service (which I'll likely be region locked out of).

To be honest I still and never will think the prequels were that bad. Flawed but I'd still rather watch them than RoTJ haha.

blakstar: I'll even go so far as to say that Star Trek V, often regarded as one of the worst movies, wasn't so bad overall! :-)
It had great character moments and some interesting ideas. It's very flawed sure, but I still enjoy watching it a lot. And I don't care if it's Shatner's ego writing the script, Kirk standing up to God and asking him what he needs with a starship is awesome.

Also- fuck me you people (not all but most) are wet blankets. I'd think that this would be a great news, but there is so much negative energy it's like you all shoud have goatees. We even have the now-obligatory-in-every-thread hurr-durr about them terrible women and black people.
