This forum topic has been very interesting to read and very helpful.

Being my first time trying to raise money all I can say I'm learning! Kickstarter provides us the *chance* for the opportunity to work on the fourth Delaware St. John game and I'm trying to do everything I can to make it as positive an experience as possible.

In the past our CD versions of games were duplicated and sold at reduced price illegally and that activity ultimately put us in a position where we didn't even have the money to continue the series anymore. So if I come across as sensitive to non-DRM, it's only for the sole reason it sabotaged us before.

However, as you can see from the current page, after having several good conversations about it, I changed my mind and I now offer a boxed, full-version collector's disc version of the game with pledges of $50 or more.

I also moved free remastered copies of all three original games to the $50 slot to in an effort to attract people who've not previously played the original games.

As for the "collector's box with a blank disc inside" I asked that question to gauge response as I was trying to find a way to make people happy without shooting myself in the foot. But seeing as the response was mixed (Some said they'd just like a collector's box, others were a bit more angry about it) I decided to go with the DRM-Free collector's disc. It seemed appropriate for someone willing to "pre-order" the game a year in advance.

I've also updated the page to include more info about the story, game features, etc. I'm now waiting for some art to help present ideas of the direction we're going.

I'm very happy this thread was sent to me. I can only improve on what I know I'm doing wrong and this thread has certainly helped point that out :)

Thank you.

-Bryan

Saturday

It's a comic book project that looks like it could something really extraordinary. I mean; Dinosaurs! Robots! Octopi! Beautiful art and a great pitch helps sell the madness. :-D

Edit:
The Delaware game looks interesting, though I have never played any of the games in the series before. I will star it for now. ^.^

Good move bro. I previously corresponded to you on Kickstarter before and expressed my disappointment, but now that you've decided to make the game DRM-free, well I have no excuse not to pledge :P

Hi Bryan,

First off, all the best with the campaign.

Here's something you might want to think about.
By including a DRM-free version only in the boxed version you may be loosing a number of backers. The boxed version is at the $50 tier which for international shipping means another $10, a total of $60. In a number of countries taxes and customs can possibly increase the cost to as high as $100.
This may be a prohibitive price for people that would be happy with just a digital download of the latest game but don't appreciate DRM.

I don't mean to sound condescending or anything or that the boxed edition is not a good package, just pointing out that due to additional costs it may be out of reach for/ not appeal to people that don't care that much for the whole package.

It would be nice to know what kind of DRM the digital version will come with.

Thanks for your time and best of luck.
@HypersomniacLive, The free digital copies of previous games are DRM-Free. I understand what everyone is saying but I think it's not being clearly stated that I am NOT putting any DRM on any version of the games. However, going with Gamers Gate, Big Fish Games, Steam, etc. THEY will do that and it's out of my control.

I definitely appreciate the feedback and will keep working on it.

Quote: "What is Spriter?

Spriter is a powerful animation tool for creating highly detailed 2d real-time game characters and effects in an intuitive, visual editor. The characters are saved to a format that allows game engines to produce higher quality visuals, while also using less video ram, and requiring less disk space per frame than traditional 2d sprite animation.

Spriter also provides several game specific features like collision boxes, and sound effect triggering, and saves to an open format that will be useable across many different game engines and platforms.

We have just begun open beta testing, anyone wanting to see or try the program for themselves will find links at the bottom of this page."

Just a passing idea: you can try to negotiate with GOG to distribute your game here. It's DRM-free, but you also earn the goodwill of GOG's fanbase. It's not like GOG's games haven't been "freely distributed" on certain sites, but I believe most users who visit this site and have purchased something at one point have the integrity to not stoop to piracy. In fact, people here get quite upset in threads that have brought up the illegal distribution of GOG's games. Banking in on GOG's fanbase basically sieves out the people who will never purchase your game.
Noticed that Marcin Iwinski is backing Jane Jensen. The man has good taste. :-)

Thanks for the clarification, Bryan.
Reading your posts in other forums, I was left with the impression it was your concious decision to go the DRM way and stick with it.

lowyhong's suggestion is a really good idea and you should explore this option.
Same goes for your previous games as your Kickstarter raised the interest of people here about them - unless you have an exclusive/ binding agreement with other digital distributors.
Cheers Bryan, good decisions, I'm in! Hope You can work this out.

Still, the final amount seems overly ambitious, as even Jane Jensen is struggling to reach a similar goal (I know that's jumping the gun as there's over 40 days left on that one, but still, hard not to compare the big names with Double Fine). Anyhow, good luck!
We haven't got too much media attention, but still, it's worth lookin' at:

I think this is the one that's only got a tech demo and no gameplaying showing? (unless they updated it).

There are a couple of updates explaining a few things :) (new project video too)
Bryan, thanks for posting here.

File sharing networks generally get bad press but in this respect they have changed one thing for the better, it's now almost impossible for commercial copiers to survive - they can't compete with P2P and have no ability to play on customer loyalty.

I've pledged based on this information so good luck - I would join others in asking that the digital copies be offered via a DRM-free service (either directly from yourself, as other projects like Wasteland 2, Leisure Suit Larry and Shadowrun Returns are doing or via GOG).

Now onto other things - first I'd like to give a mention as being (arguably) a better way to browse KS projects than KS itself. It also shows pledge graphs and projected totals (OMG, [url=http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/1613260297/shadowrun-returns/]ShadowRun Returns has a $5.1 million projection).

Other KS projects worth noting:
Remee - The REM enhancing Lucid Dreaming Mask
The Phoenix Syndicate (board/card game - looks similar to Settlers of Catan).
