Doom 3 is very boring, for me.
It's all the same, and it is too long (this is the first time I cry for a game too ong, usually I cry for too short games XD).

Falci: I'm very interested in the update, but have no interest in paying full price for it. An update for less than 10 bucks option would be great, actually. Also, it worries me that I still can't see the game's store page over Steam. Shouldn't it be there for pre-order already?
a 10 bucks update is too much.On Amazon UK you can buy the full game, including the first two Doom, for 18 euro.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doom-BFG-Edition-PC-DVD/dp/B0087OTSU4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1350043651&sr=8-2

So maybe an update for 5 euro is the right price.

SimonG: Honestly, how Japan is treating their PC gamers is the biggest justification for a terrorist group I've ever seen.
Well in this case the problem is that PC releases are done inline with the console releases, for which the dates seem to be determined by randomly throwing darts at following year's calender (the latest of those being that Hitman Absolution won't release until 2013 in Japan now so that it can be "polished").

The release dates for PCs wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't for Steamworks. No other DRM has ever locked us out past the international release date. But as I say. It's ridiculously easy to negate even that.

I'm already enjoying Borderlands 2 despite its release here on the 27th. And all I needed to do that was the short time on a VPN for it to unlock, launch once, and be set to never auto update. After that, all you need is one very simply text file in the game's directory and a desktop shortcut to the exe. With that, Steam can't prevent the game launching, regardless of your IP address =)

And at the end of the day, Valve can't actually do anything about it. That's pretty clear given how many people do it and the fact that a Valve employee pretty much hinted at doing as much. And I quote "Note that I said it's geo-fenced, meaning Steam key activation is also IP-based. <wink wink>".

So ultimately, I'm past worrying about their silly IP blocks. The only downside is having to pay for the VPN (I personally don't trust the widespread free ones, I prefer to pay for this little known one that runs on servers I trust : Linode servers). But it's a small extra cost to get to play the game at a reasonable time and not several months after ROW have plastered spoilers everywhere.

----
I notice a few silly typos in that reply. But forgive me for not fixing them, seems the forum software is eating up line breaks so I won't risk editing that and turning it into a mangled wall of text.

darthspudius: I thought they lifted the ban on the original doom?
avatar
SimonG: They did, but nobody told Steam yet.
Then shouldnt someone make the point to the fellas running steam?

inc09nito: Doom 3 was one of the biggest disappointments to me. It's nothing like fun I had with original Doom / Doom 2. To me Serious Sam is the game that inherited the spirit of classic Doom, and Doom 3 isn't worth its name.
Doom 3 has just as much to do with the original Dooms as Serious Sam does. It kept the free level exploration (doors don't just lock behind you like they do in SS), keycard hunting, monster closets, and some of the same monster behavior and strategies. All it was missing was the enemy count and pace of the combat (and the level designs could have stood to be a little less realistic and a little more mazey of course). Serious Sam's only similarity is that its combat is fast-paced, and it has secrets. Otherwise it's nothing like Doom.

Myrokratios: Also, I seem to be the only person in existance who doesn't think that Serious Sam and Painkiller is like Doom.
avatar
stonebro: Serious Sam and Painkiller are, indeed, not like Doom. There, now there's two of us.
oops. Ninjad twice :P

I thought I'll buy it, basically for the "complete" experience - I've played some Doom and Doom II in my youth but never finished, so this could be a nice packed way to pay my dues (and have fun! :D

but from reading here about "steam only" and "censored to the roof", I'm really going to reconsider...

Kunovski: "censored to the roof", I'm really going to reconsider...
There might be (nobody knows until it is out) a single adjusted enemy. That is it.

hmmm, ok, that's something I don't mind at all... let's kill the steam-only thing now and we have a deal! :D
I'll get it someday in a sale for the new levels. Pretty sure the graphics update is only for consoles.

Or you can get the original Doom 3. It's still got pretty stunning visuals since most of it comes from pretty level design, and it's a fantastic game. AND you get a ton of mods for it, including the Dark Project.

And that's precisely what i have in mind. You just confirm my words. In a shooter I mostly care about... shooting. To me Serious Sam has the same feeling as classic Doom.

*whine* but I want that complete collection! *whine* :D

really, this is more about the "official" first two games than the third one... and if the price was about 25 dollars I would really think this is a great deal...

Will the mods stay compatible?

Won't buy this. Some of the more graphic content has been cut.
