So many games start by changing the screen mode. There really isn't any good reason for this. And they usually set it to some "least common denominator" resolution like 800x600 pixels and hope that their choice of default resolution fails on as few machines as possible. This means everyone needs to manually change their resolution (possibly having to hack the registry or a config file to do so) and the whole thing is completely unnecessary because the screen mode is pretty much guaranteed to be just fine the way it was before the game started.
