Dear Santas PaterAlf and skimmie, thank you for the Christmas giveaway.

As with most of us, my favorite Christmas movie is Home Alone. Additionally, I really like following movies as well:
- Jingle all the Way (with Schwarzenegger)
- Love Actually
- The Holiday
- The Elf (with Wil Ferrell).

I would be happy to participate in the giveaway. Any gift from Santas would be amazing of course. My absolute wish would be the Titan Quest: Atlantis (DLC). I have completed the main game and the Ragnarok DLC on legendary already and can't await to explore the Atlantis.

Thank you again for the giveaway and happy holiday season!

snowkatt: gremlins best christmas movie
Is gremlins truly a Christmas movie tho?
I'll be in. Thanks guys! It'll give me a good excuse to update my wishlist, too.

I've seen lots of good replies here and many I haven't seen.

My favorite is probably White Christmas. Good music (especially for a musical) , good fun, and warm feels.

In my family, we traditionally watch National Lampoon's, White Christmas, A Christmas Story, one or two of the Grinches, Elf, Miracle on 34th (I like the 90s, my wife likes the 30s), and It's a Wonderful Life (I don't think I've ever made it through the whole thing), and Home Alone.

I think it's is great that families around the globe enjoy movies together as a Christmas tradition. We enjoy ours with my wife's special hot chocolate. A ball of Lindt chocolate on the bottom takes it right over the top.

I've shamefully never seen Die Hard. I may rectify that this year.

I enjoyed Gremlins as a kid but my kids were booked with it the last time I showed them. They may be more receptive this year.

Oh, and as a bonus, we get When Harry Met Sally loaded up for New Years Eve or plus/minus a few days.

GamesRater: Btw to all who said Christmas Vacation: Did y'all know there's a sequel, which features Cousin Ernie's family, and also stars Ed Asner(and a pinup model)?

(Head's up: It's not too good, but it has a few decent points)
Oh I'm well aware of it. The movie's a complete train wreck and nothing like the first movie. I still have hope that we get another sequel that updates the original. Like maybe a "Grandpa's Christmas Vacation" where Clark is now the grandparent and his son Rusty has taken over trying to make everyone happy for Christmas. But I have to be careful what I wish for or else I'll end up with another Eddy Christmas. O_o
Thanks for the Christmas Surprise, we sure need it this year.

Probably my favorite special Christmas tv show is The Grinch.

My favorite Christmas movie is Elf.

Happy Holidays everyone and stay safe.

aCyborg: Is gremlins truly a Christmas movie tho?
same can be said for home alone and die hard
they take place DURING the christmas holidays
does that make them a christmas movie ?

if so then gremlins is also in
besides i like its subversive tone it goes from family friendly holiday movie to something thats not
I'm in!

One of my favorite Christmas movies is Die Hard. Yes, it is an action flick but it just feels Christmasy. I watch it and the rest of the movies in the franchise during the holiday season. It still holds up and still entertains me to this day. If you're a Die Hard fan and curious how I rank them from best to worst then here it is:

Die Hard
Die Hard with a Vengeance
Die Hard 4.0
Die Hard 2
A Good Day to Die Hard

Genocide2099: Die Hard

Die Hard 4.0
Die Hard 2
A Good Day to Die Hard
isn't Live Free or Die Hard also part of the series?

I enjoyed 4.0 because John McClane is still John McClane in that one. He still does not understand technology. He still acts like a cop. He's still in the wrong place at the wrong time. He still gets his ass kicked a lot. And his shirt still becomes grimy at the end of the movie. The movie also has a simple plot just like the previous films. Bad guys want money. John needs to stop them. The 5th movie on the other hand is a huge departure from his character. And the plot is so complicated and nonsensical. IIRC, the script was supposed to be for a 24 full length movie.

Yes. It's also called Die Hard 4.0 in some regions. I like to call it that instead of Live Free or Die Hard. lol

Really depends on you. The 3rd and 4th one are still entertaining and retains what made Die Hard fun to watch. Ignore the 5th one because that one is just pure garbage.

Catac1ysm: Home alone is the best movie about Christmas ever =)

ciemnogrodzianin: In Poland it has become a tradition (and also a subject of jokes and memes) that main TV channels shows Home Alone every Christmas. No Christmas without Kevin in Poland :D Does it work the same in Russia perhaps?
As I don't have traditional TV for over a dozen years, I haven't watched the movie for years. But last year we wanted to show the classic to our kids and we made cinema evening before Christmas. And you know – it was awesome! :D I remembered watching it in childhood, but it's still so good! This year we should definitely make the same with HA2.

paladin181: The best Christmas movies are Home Alone and Die Hard. (...) Excellent movies that always make good background for Christmas time festivities.
avatar
ciemnogrodzianin: I forgot about Die Hard! This indeed is perfect for Christmas. I have to refresh the movie this year, thanks!
By the way – that's interesting how many movies tries to catch that theme and specific atmosphere of the year and how few of them really suceed.
Weird. Barefoot Essentials quick reply features aren't working on the first page of this thread for me.

Anyhow. Yeah, it's a good movie. People argue that it isn't a Christmas movie, but my thought is, McLean went all the way to LA to try and reconcile with his wife, and then goes through Hell and sacrifices his own well being for their sake. It's bloody and violent, but at it's core it is about giving of yourself to help others. If that isn't the Christmas Spirit, then I don't know what is.

Also, Die Hard and Home Alone are very similar. One is just a far grittier more adult version of improvising traps for intruders while staying stealthy.

snowkatt: die hard 2 is technically also a christmas movie
it takes place during christmas as well
something the sequels dropped cause after two times it started to get contrived
Well, yeah. The first one made sense. It was a get together for a Christmas party that was the basis of the film, and the celebration is what brought the lack of security that allowed the terrorist threat to happen.

Thanks for the opportunity to jump into the holiday spirit with this discussion and giveaway, I'm in!

When it comes to Christmas movies the most iconic one for me (and I guess for many as well) would be "The Princess Bride", but I also tend to find a special feeling of coziness and warmth within old American films such as "It's a Wonderful Life", "To Kill a Mockingbird", "The Third Man", etc. During this time of the year it's just really nice to go back to traditional Hollywood cinema and wrap oneself around those heavy old sets, convoluted plots, and dramatic line deliveries :)

zlaywal: I'd recommend Tokyo Godfathers, an anime from one the genre's great, the late Satoshi Kon. It's about 3 homeless people that found a baby on Christmas Eve. AS with Kon's more celebrated works like Millennium Actress and Paprika, the movies contain roller-coaster of emotion with critique of Japanese society.
Very interesting movie, I totally concur with the recommendation!
For me there is really no special Christmas movie, but in my country "Trading Places" has become a sort of tradition; one of the main TV emitters before anything "on demand" became all the rage used to air it every single Christmas Eve, and lately they have proudly (and jokingly) announced they will never break the habit. Honestly, as far as I can remember that movie has really always being aired then, so -excluding the distant past I have no memory of- it has been going on for at least 25 years.

I would like to join if you don't mind. :)
Thanks a lot!

EDIT: btw, I can totally recommend Tokyo Godfathers as well, a great title form a great director who left us way too soon.

Is that the one with Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd? I have to watch that again. It's one of those movies where I can barely remember what happened in the film.
