Well with the hot mess that was the launch of the SP game, I can see why they chose to do so.

That said, what are y'alls thoughts on this?

Was anyone on the forums actually waiting/hoping to play it? What do y'all think this will mean for the company(CDPR/GOG)?

Another microtransaction filled multiplayer game from CDP never sat well with me, having Gwent here is bad enough.

Though I wonder what the actual motivation for shutting it down is, I don't think it's just down to loss of revenue from the catastrophic base game launch.

I can't help but wonder if they realised that their most beloved foreign market would likely ban the game outright if the CCP actually investigated the content of the game, there's a whole lot about the base game that violates their content guidelines.

Well, if the multiplayer would have taken on a more restricted approach such as you can find with mass effect i'm sure a lot of players would have enjoyed the setting. CDPR's only hope left is now that hentai modders take over and create a lot of adult rated content. transforming cyberpunk in this years skyrim 2.O

One can expect to see micro-transactions creeping in to monetize on the multiplayer/online portion they are now planning to implement. Mr. Kiciński in the conference call about CP said as much:

"Same as with our base game, our single-player games. We want gamers to be happy while spending money on our products. Same with microtransactions. So you can expect them, of course, and Cyberpunk 2077 is a great setting to sell things, but it won't be aggressive. So it won't upset gamers, but it will make them happy. That's our goal at least."

That's the direction they are now going to take. Finding a way to milk consumers with micro-transactions in an unobtrusive and friendly way - and, no, Mr. Kiciński, whatever you are going to sell, there is never any value attached to the items. As long as the person playing and paying for it doesn't own the items and can't sell it (think of WoW marketplace) this is more of a waste of money than anything. ;-)
yes yes, very true, as clearly stated in the other cpdr directional future messages, cut the company into components dedicated to a certain game and some online functional use since that is where all the fun will be, is at
Well, that is good news that they won't develop another micro-transaction atrocity for the time being. I hope, against reason, that they will release DLCs instead that will add originally planned content into the game. Perhaps they can make Cyberpunk the game they promised, eventually. After several years of DLC development. And maybe they will even remove the DRM from their DLC eventually. ... Hey, one can dream!

More realistically, however, would be the expectation that they'll add some kind of micro-transaction (and maybe multiplayer) functionality to the base game via some 'free' DLC later. Which will of course also add more DRM, because otherwise Micro-Transactions wouldn't work.

the motivation is simple... multiplayer needs a working game + a working network and 0 for 2 = cancelled
Good riddance.
The stolen and sold-off source code for the main game likely gave it the coup de grace, I could imagine.

I'm a single-player gamer only, so this is good news for me.

In the case of Cyberpunk, this might be the best choice. I haven't played the game, but it's well know that it's still filled with problems, despite all the patches. So I hope that by cancelling the multiplayer, they can now put all those resources into fixing the game and develop more single player content.

People that were looking forward to the multiplayer component are going to be disappointed, but honestly after all that happened with this game, I guess everyone is hoping that they focus on the essencial.
It doesn't sound like they are directly cancelling it more than they are re-thinking their approach to it. One news outlet states, they want to bring an online element to all of their games, so they are developing a system that can be utilized more widely.

So, one possibility seems to be, it could become something like GTAV online, where it's a direct part of the main game instead of a stand-alone release like it was previously envisioned as.
