I followed the news on GOG from when they started up. My first purchase was Freespace 1. I went years without looking into the community much, but recently discovered how good it is here.

I found ot about GOG on a website I visited to.... get games ^_^'''
I got curious, so I googled GOG, and found this place.

I thought the times when I just put my disc into the PC and play were the past, and every game needed online crap to make it work, wich I hated since I always thought "what if I want to play the game 20 years later? I won't be able to, because their servers are down?"
I LOVED the idea of buying a game, installing it, and just PLAYING. But what really convinced me were the sales.

When I first visited, The Witcher was on sale for cheap, and since I often bought good games for cheap, I joined and bought it. (using my mom's paypal, because I didn't have my own xD )
I thought I won't buy anything else here, but then Trine went on sale for cheap... then gobliiins.... then came the "create your own bundle" promo... then xmas sale....

Xmas sale was the last step.
When I joined, The Witcher 2 was still regoinally priced (35 eruro i think), and during Xmas sale I bought it for... 5$ I think.
I didn't know anything about the connection between The Witcher and GOG (only did my homework later), but this was too awesome to belive :3

Ans thus a legitimate customer was born^^
Alan Wake -- I wanted to support Remedy for releasing it on PC and when I saw it on sale here, it was a good excuse to finally make an account.
Settlers 2, one of the two old games I never managed to get running on my newer PC on my own... so when I finally gave up, I searched for other ways and found this site :D
curiosity
i signed up on 9 oct 2010
forgot about it untill i got an email about a sale that caught my eye because it mentioned broken sword directors cut on sale

and here i am 102 games later
Two worlds.

Because of the good community.
I seriously should have a pasta of this whenever another thread pops up.

In June 2010, three assholes decided to torture me into signing my real estate over to them. I fled to a rented apartment and was able to rescue some of my stuff, including my game collection. Unfortunately, another criminal scammed the landlady and helped himself to some of my games while at that, including Beyond Divinity. Beyond Divinity wasn't exactly popular, and no decent noCD existed for it.

So I bought a GOG copy, and, having had to confront the sad ephemerality of physical collectables and being unable to buy anything physical for myself lest the landlady realizes I have more money to squeeze out, I started buying everything that happened to be on promo. As of now, I have 713 games.

I joined last Summer to get free Torchlight... which really helped reignite my interest in PC gaming after years of giving up on all too soon outdated computers. Suddenly a whole decade of high caliber PC gaming that I'd missed out on opened before me... digital distribution, crazy low prices, indie titles, etc etc etc.
I joined because I could not believe their policies, and that using these they could stay in business. It was too good to be true. Yet, I stand corrected, and I'm happy about it. GOG for me is one of the most honest, and greatest companies out there, supplying games. Also, we (Hungarians and Polish) tend to have a kind of feeling, that we are relatives. And I'd like to support a Polish company.

My first purchase: I can't really remember, it was back in 2009. It was either Serious Sam: First Encounter or Postal 2. The second was the Witcher, of course :D

Trust me, you're much better off that way. I have a lot of physical books currently and it's not fun having to relocate the entire library each time I move, having to protect them in shoddy apartments, having to keep track of stuff I lend out and inevitably doesn't get returned... Digital is the way to go.

You can check if you like by sorting your game shelf or list by Purchase Date on the right hand side, that's what I did. Then just scroll to the bottom and skip over any games you know were freebies. :)

+1 on Postal 2. Hope you're as excited as I am about the soon to be released Postal 2 mega patch on GOG too! :o)
I stumbled into GOG almost by chance: I was reading a review on the RPG Codex (I'm not a member, but I often check it out; those guys might be "a bit" edgy, but they surely know what they are talking about) and found out there was a site that was selling The Wicher 2 for 4$. I clicked the link, read the main page and the core values... and in that precise moment, my soul was lost!
All the games I played years ago, along with all those I missed but always wanted to try, DRM-free, (usually) working without the need of additional patching and as cheap as they can be (without that BLOODY regional pricing scam that forced me to always pay 35% more than in other countries)? I couldn't have asked for more.
Besides, I was tired to be treated like a criminal by Big Brother Gabe & partners or bowing my head in front of Microsoft and Sony with their monopolistic and abusing market model. Also, I think I haven't played a non-indie fun game in at least five years, so I'm more than happy to catch up with the classics.
After a while, I started posting in the forums, and the welcoming and helpful community made me want to keep on staying.
Yet another topic with this timeless classic subject... :-)
But, still, I can't resist the temptation to narrate again how I joined GOG and what were my first purchased games. :-)

I joined in May 2013 (May 29th to be exact, as seen from the freebies in my shelf) after reading in a site (Kotaku I think, but I'm not sure) that Treasure Adventure Game was given as a freebie upon joining (hence my username- I tend to create my usernames based on the reason I join the site in question). After that, I forgot somewhat about the site (btw, noticing a pattern here-seems I'm not the only one to have joined and then forgotten about the site) until the end of October 2013, when I received an email regarding a 60% off Ubisoft promo (at that time, I wanted Rayman Forever only from a retail Rayman bundle costing 20 euros). I thus bought Rayman Forever along with Beyond Good and Evil and Splinter Cell and those were my first purchases(on Nov 4, according to my shelf). I noticed the existence of the forums at the end of November 2013 and I remained a regular customer (and forum goer) on GOG since! :-)
Age of Wonders !

but it was the best fantasy TBS of all time, imo of course :P, that made me stay. I'm talking of
course about Disciples 2 !!
I think I've answered this before...

I came to GOG after I learned somewhere that The Witcher (and The Witcher 2?) could be bought here digitally, fully DRM-free. It sounded too good to be true, fortunately it wasn't.

Albeit now I am unsure if TW2 was here already back in June 2011, as GOG lists it as published a year later? Either way, I initially came here for DRM-free The Witcher and/or The Witcher 2, mostly. The selection of older classics seemed nice too, albeit I seemed to own most of them already in physical form (but it is still nice to have many of them for convenience in one DRM-free installer, or as a backup).

However, the very first games I bought here were M.A.X. + M.A.X.2. bundle, and The Castles 1+2 bundle. They were kind of a test for me how the service and payment method works, before I started buying more games. I installed and played M.A.X. (my first GOG game) the first time late last year I think, so it took me a few years from purchase to actually playing it. Story of my life, I have countless other games also I bought like a decade ago, and yet to install or play.
