PaterAlf: And after watching Home Alone 2 you can play a cute game with your kids. Santa left something in your stocking.
Thank you! It's really great! We're fighting the pudding levels.
Oh, and you should also check your own stocking from time to time! ;)
And here's a Spinal Tap Christmas song:

servobeupstry: Seinfeld Season 9 Episode 10 introduced the world to Festivus, the alternative Dec 23 holiday tradition celebrated by George's family. It starts with a Festivus Pole: an unadorned aluminium pole (George's father "finds tinsel distracting"), is followed by the Airing of Grievances (where everyone in attendance gets to say how everyone else has disappointed them the past year) and ends with the Feats of Strength, where a chosen guest must wrestle the head of the household ("stop crying and fight your father!"). The celebrations cannot end until he's been pinned. The holiday is now celebrated for real by Seinfeld fans around the world, including me!
Happy Festivus for the rest of us!

Happy Festivus! You pinned Santa and he gave you a gift in return.

The Jack Benny Shopping trips with Mel Blanc
Fibber McGee & Molly Christmas episodes

Modern radio: the now deceased Stuart McLean's "Dave & Morley" Christmas shows especially "Dave Cooks the Turkey": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOmdJKn29ws

Movies: Meet John Doe (sooooooo goood!!!! the story of the baseball player who does anything to live in the days before Tommy John surgery is one of the best and most heart-warming movies I know of.)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cheaters_(1945_film) This one tugs on the heart-strings and reminds me of how much we actually have that we aren't grateful for.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_on_a_Train (I adore Deanna Durbin's voice) Song. My favorite female singer in the movies is in a detective film-noir type movie.
Christmas in Connecticut 1945. Barbara Stanwyck and Dennis Morgan star in this movie of a Big City author who has lied about her life on her farm, and painted such a fascinating picture that her boss (who hates all liars) invited himself to her non-existent "house" in the country.
Nice classic stuff in your post. Now I'll have to look for a place to watch it. Santa left a gift in your stocking.
Scrooged is also a great christmas movie!

And here's another heavy metal christmas song by the german speed metal band Stallion:

TheMonkofDestiny: I'd like to be in, if possible. If not, here's something either way:

Christmas was my mother's favorite time of the year. After she passed away in January this year (unrelated to the pandemic, thankfully, but no less heartbreaking), I knew things were going to be rough when this time rolled in.

Beyond her baking all kinds of cookies and the occasional cake during this time, she loved those Lifetime and Hallmark cable channel Christmas movies. So much so that she tended to watch them almost constantly. It's surreal knowing that I don't get the sensation of smelling something baking and hearing any number of Christmas tunes coming from her television this year. It became so commonplace to me that I didn't really see it as a tradition of sorts until noticing that it's gone. While I'd give anything in the world to have her back, I know that I can at least find any Christmas special and think back on how happy she was during this time of year (I'm not really much of a baker and I don't think most people would like a rando breaking in just to take in the smells of their home during this time of year - nor would law enforcement, I'm sure).
Losing a relative is always tough and painful. I wish you all the best and hope you will still be able to enjoy the holidays, even if just a little bit.

Check your stocking.

Thank you (and PaterAlf as well).

It's definitely been difficult to process and grieve in a way that doesn't put my mind into really dark places due to the usual avenues like communicating with people in-person being mostly closed off for all the unfortunate reasons.

I was used to dealing with grandparents passing away but I wasn't really prepared for how much harder an impact it would have when it was a parent and I see now how bad my parents felt when they were essentially in my position at points in the past.

I don't want to be a dour cloud on the thread though so I'll leave it there.

I will say, as I've gone outside to take out garbage/etc. when needed, I've noticed how different the neighborhood decorations are this year. While typically I would see lights strung around houses, trees, bushes, etc. this year it seems the neighbors have opted to go for those lights staked into the ground that project patterns onto what they're pointed at.

It looks nice but something about it feels like it's missing that... verve, I guess, that comes from a string of lights. Maybe it's just me getting old and wistful on things, I don't know. I did notice that one neighbor did decide to place a large light-up inflatable snowman near their front door which was oddly captivating to see. I don't think they thought it through too much though, as the strong winds that usually come by have tended to topple it over quite often and typically in the mornings the snowman is usually on his side or propped against their door like he's trying to find keys in the dark after a nog bender.

51nikopol: Thanks for the Christmas Surprise, we sure need it this year.

Probably my favorite special Christmas tv show is The Grinch.

My favorite Christmas movie is Elf.

Happy Holidays everyone and stay safe.
Santa left a gift for you. Luckily the Grinch isn't around. So you'll better open it before he shows up and steals it.
